Chertoff is a LONGTIME, and VERY partisan BFEE tool.
I don't think this nation needs a Homeland Security chief who back in 98 believed the biggest danger to the constitution and the America people was Bill Clinton's extramarital dalliance.

I wouldn't doubt he was also one of the Republican tools who claimed Clinton's attacks on Bin Laden were just distractions from impeachment.

Chertoff has been a legal hammer for Republicans for decades. He is WAY too partisan to be Homeland Security chief.

1. Never Heard of Him
and don't care. We need to start picking our fights. Who cares who is named Homeland Security Chief. And of course a cabinet member is going to be partisan. Are you surprised. That is what happens when you f-up an election like we did. The other guys pick their partisans. We need to stop whining and start winning. Then, we can pick who we want (and trust me, they will be "partisans). Anyhow, who did you expect --- really?

4. You need to care who is picked because
they will have all the power of the patriot act and the patriot act - the sequel to wield against us. Basic freedoms ARE at stake here.

6. I am shocked that ANYONE would urge us to NOT care.
It's Dems and liberal activists who will be targeted by Chertoff.

5. Baloney. I expected a Republican who REALLY understands terror like Rudman
who worked to develop a Homeland Security plan and examine global terror with Gary Hart LONG before 9-11.

Even Newt Gingrich would have been a better choice, since he also, worked on the Hart-Rudman report on Global Terror.

11. Chertoff and DOJ's Monitoring of Modems
Nov. 28, 2001 PT

>>>>Previously, federal law said that "a cable operator shall not disclose personally identifiable information concerning any subscriber." Section 211 of the USA Patriot Act changes the law to read: "A cable operator may disclose such information if the disclosure is ... to a government entity."

Other USA Patriot Act sections mean that police can obtain an Internet Protocol address, which identifies a cable modem subscriber, as readily as they can learn someone's telephone number.

Chertoff said the government also has used its new powers to obtain court orders for logs from Internet providers that are outside of the court's traditional jurisdiction.

"We've obtained court orders directed to out-of-district Internet service providers for logging information.... We've used the nationwide search warrant provision to obtain relevant information," Chertoff said. "We've used the emergency disclosure provisions to support our use of information that was provided to us by an Internet service provider."
