On the Death of a Patriot (for Khephra)
http://truthout.org/fyi/

Well I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
Yes I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my brother standing by
With my brother standing by
I said Brother, you know you know
It’s a long road we’ve been walking on
Brother you know it is you know it is
Such a long road we’ve been walking on

- Alexi Murdoch

His name was Scott, and he lived in Indiana, and he was a little man. Almost nobody beyond his immediate family knew his name. His knee was bad and his back was bad, and his soul was of such a tender quality that this hard world bruised him early and often.

I got to know him on the forums at DemocraticUnderground, a website dedicated to progressive causes and liberal politics. He wrote me a private message one day, telling me his story. His physical disabilities had rendered him incapable of working a traditional job, and this left him despairing for a long time. When he wrote me, he was just coming out from under. He asked me to check the posts he put up, to make sure they were clear and concise. I did so, and saw pretty quickly that he didn’t need my help.

Over the course of the next two years, this little man became a giant within that online community. Posting under the name ‘Khephra,’ he took it upon himself to track the news from as many sources as possible. His disabilities kept him from being able to work, so he made the gathering and disbursing of information his work. He sat in his small office with two tiny televisions going, and tracked the action in the House and Senate while keeping an eye on CNN. He would keep a running thread of information about the doings in Congress for the edification of the members of that online community who could not watch. He scoured the news wires and put up the stories that mattered with immediacy.

Scott was a Dean man from the word ‘Go.’ He called me on the day he joined the Hoosiers for Dean campaign, and the joy and pride in his voice radiated through the telephone. In the rancorous environment of online political debate, during a primary season marked too often by poisonous rhetoric, he was a calm voice of reason and logic. In May 2003, he helped bring Dean to the Jefferson Jackson dinner. Being able to shake the Governor’s hand and spend time with him was, by far and away, the greatest moment of Scott’s life.

A funny thing happened as time went by. Scott, with his bad back and his bad knee and all that rough road behind and ahead of him, became an integral and indispensable part of the alternative online news media. Dozens, and then hundreds, and then thousands, and then tens of thousands of people looked for his work every day to inform themselves, and to pass that information on to others. The information Scott put out was spread far and wide on countless alternative news sites. Behind every good alternative news organization is a person who goes out and does the research, finds the stories, and makes them available to others. That was Scott’s role, and nobody did it better.

4. That is very well said, Will.
I hope everyone will read the whole thing.

I have been thinking today about how I can be saddened in such a personal way by the death of someone I never met, whose name I did not know, and and whom I never communicated with directly.

You have expressed the nature of the contribution he made to this "community," and hence, why we feel a sense of personal loss.

8. I'm sad to say I didn't know "Khephra", but by the posts of so many,
he sounds like such a patriot and dear soul. I sure hope he is smilling down on all of you. I'll bet that he never, never knew how much he touched all of your lives. Perhaps there will be a way to memorialize his life here at DU. His mom must surely be proud of the worlds he bridged and the lives he touched.

9. Thanks for a eulogy that serves Scott and the DU community well.
Sad as this loss is, it reminds me of the resilience of humanity even in a culture where we rarely breathe the same air, physically separated from friends, family, and neighbors by the autobahns and stripmalls and 24-hour wage-slave economy.

The integrity of our soul and the symbols it uses to touch others can't be stopped by the even the anonymous faceless distance between us.

Scott's story is a wonderful example of this truth-out.
Sad and wonderful.

Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 03:40 PM by Just Me
He proved that no matter how powerless one may be in face of circumstances beyond one's control, one can always find power within themselves to make impactful contributions to this world.

At least his pain has ended  and I am certain that he now knows both peace and freedom.

Still, I will miss his passion and hope, his graciousness and generosity, and,...his integrity!

Will, thank for posting this sincere acknowledgement of Khephra! I want to acknowledge how valuable you are, too!!!

We've lost a real friend. I never met him in person, but he touched my life in ways that are hard to put into words. Will, you did conveyed this as well as anyone could.

Thanks for a great tribute to a great guy. Way back in the spring of 2001 I started reading here, and Kef was a fountain of information. I regret that I will never be able to repay him for everything he taught me.

22. There are Men Too Gentle to Live Among Wolves

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow and children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who anoint them for burial with greedy claws
And murder them for a merchant's profit and gain.
There are men too gentle for a corporate world
Who dream instead of candied apples and ferris wheels
And pause to hear the distant whistle of a train.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who devour them with eager appetite and search
For other men to prey upon and suck their childhood dry.
There are men too gentle for an accountant's world
Who dream instead of Easter eggs and fragrant grass
And search for beauty in the mystery of the sky.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who toss them like a lost and wounded dove.
Such gentle men are lonely in a merchant's world,
Unless they have a gentle one to love.

He will obviosly be sorely missed by this community. Again, my sympathies to all his friends and his mother who obviously loved him dearly as only a mother can. May his spirit soar with the patriots that came before him and may all those patriots that come after him eventually find thier place by his side!

64. Thank you Will
Hi DU,

I've been a long time anonymous lurker here at DU (frankly your message board seems daunting, yet i love the articles), and after reading the tributes to Khephra, I decided I needed to sign up.

I thought the best way to honor a poster here would be to say that what they say matters and they have impact on people.

Thanks Khephra for all you did. Thanks to everyone here for keeping his memory and ideals alive. My prayers to his family.

-b...

72. Welcome home.
We are all stunned and so let me be the first to say thank you for your kind words and welcome to DU. If Kephra moved you to sign in well, what can I say, he moved me many days. I remember most his running commentary while our Congress was in session.

Our prayers are with the whole DU community, but especially his family.

65. Thank you, Will - that was beautifully written.
I was wondering: has anyone notified Howard Dean of Khephra's death? Somehow, I think it would be appropriate to let him know that one of his greatest supporters has died.

I really didn't know anything about Khephra until I heard of his death. He sounds like a remarkable person, and my condolences to ALL of you who have lost a good friend. You carry his memory well.

I will miss his huge presence and spirit on DU. He has touched so many of us in so many ways.

My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

71. A wonderful tribute
to a servant of truth and seeker of justice. Could any of his archives be posted as a tribute here? I would hate to see his voice simply retired. Most people like me don't often remember all the responses and threads as they move on, but Klephra constantly showed up where quality work needed to be done. A lot of people pile up the post numbers but surely those who die on the far side of victory might serve as silent witness in some Hall of Fame where perhaps their accomplishments can be highlighted.

We are more than an electronic rabble babble brain. We are a community of people who have rarely met, rarely distinguish our own voices, rarely know the influence or appreciation of individual effort. A final toast to Scott and a toast to all just hearts.

73. Just signed on to find this sad news....
Thanks for the lovely tribute Will. I didn't know Kep like many of you did/do but when I saw his name in a post I knew I was in the company of a DU "lifer" and I felt safe.

Like everyone else, I'm terribly sad to hear of his death. I don't know what happened but I send my deepest condolences to his friends and family.

This is the second time in some months that a tragedy has befallen members of this board. I must say that the outpouring of good will and prayers for our members by DUers really does touch my heart.

I'm so very sorry for his passing and for the loss felt by his friends.....He will not soon be forgotten I'm sure..

Eternal Peace to you Scott ^j^

74. As a Fellow Blogger
I have been a moderator of the I Hate Bush Fan Club on Yahoo and now on Google for 5 years and I appreciate all the work that goes into these pages. From what I've read here this man was a Saint. I never knew him and now I feel cheated.

75. How perfect, how grateful, how loving a tribute.
I have not been around long enough to recognize the magnitude of the loss, but I wish I had noticed, and am grateful for the tributes.
We are a group of people very devoted to each other and the cause and the country. Kephra already has moved on to where if he could reach us, all kinds of new revelations would need to be shared.
I am happy to see the devotion and gratitude to him.
That's what makes us real.

76. Inspiring, dude...
Thank you so much.

I never knew Kef personally, but he once PM'd me and reassured me that my "conspiracy theories" would never be banned - as long as I had links to my claims and be willing to back them up in a debate...

Often I'd go to post a "conspiracy theory" thread...only to find that Kef had beat me to it...

He did have a tender soul and a strong belief in social justice, speaking truth to and about power, doing the right thing...

Goddamit all to Hell, I'll miss him. The Man I never met but felt I knew well...

Thirty Seven years old...

Rest In Peace, friend....

78. I didn't know Khephra, but Will's tribute makes me feel I now know him...
...a little.

How amazing that he made his own media outlet and did what he could despite disabilities. Absolutely amazing! He did what he could and rolled the bones. It takes a lot of courage to play the hand you're dealt.

What's the deal? Spin the wheel.
If the dice are hot, take a shot.
Play your cards. Show us what you got,
What you're holding.
If the cards are cold,
Don't go folding.
Lady Luck is golden;
She favors the bold. That's cold.
Stop throwing stones.
The night has a thousand saxophones.
So get out there and rock,
And roll the bones.

79. Thank you Will
I only knew Scott from his writings here at DU. Makes me wonder if the autopsy will show that he died of a broken heart over the state of our country. May God rest his soul. I only hope now that Scott is in heaven he can pull some strings for us.

83. I hope that wherever he is he gets to read about how much
he is missed here and how important he was to members of this community. I never met him in person, but I cried last night because the world is a little colder without him.

Will, your words about him are so beautiful. I love your writing, and I know Khephra would be pleased.

He was an exceptional person and it's too hard to let him go . . .
