1. I don't know why it happens
but it's been happening a long time. Back in the late 1800's and early 1900's is when the Irish immigrants experienced extreme racial prejudice from the Anglos. The Irish, in turn, started to turn on the blacks. It really is a sad situation. It would be better if all oppressed peoples could unite and defeat racism and other types of discrimination.

2. well its been a well documented fact
that oppresion from the outside leads to the opressed oppressive to someone even less powerful. (generally researched for sexism within cultures that have been oppressed by other cultures)

3. There is an ancient saying
Greek I think -- the oppressed oppress

so perhaps this is nothing new. As for why it happens, the short answer is probably that stereotypes and predjudice is self-reinforcing.

Groups bond because of their similarities and then exclude based on differences. Some of that rejection comes out in the form of racism. To really over-simplify this, people who are put down by the MSM and main stream culture have a greater need to say in effect 'I'm better than _____' where blank is the name of another group.

5. One need only look at the last election ...
BushCo managed to make "gay marriage" to drive a wedge between black and gay voters, both of whom traditionally tended to vote Democratic.

6. Sadly I've seen it in my family
Anytime you get a group of people unified the first thing they do is decide a who's in, and who's out standard. On the light side of my family there is definitely an attitude given to other on the darker side. Which is funny in an ironic way, since were not that diverse when it comes to skin tone. Being an outsider for a number of reason, I get watch the acrimony go back and force. I wish I could come up with a reason to why beyond the general one I just gave.
