Bullock, DiCaprio, NBC to aid tsunami victims

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood opened its wallet Monday to survivors of the tsunami disaster as movie stars Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio donated big sums to relief agencies and NBC planned a celebrity-studded TV benefit.

The goodwill gestures of the entertainment industry came as President Bush and his two immediate predecessors -- former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, the current president's father -- appealed to Americans to contribute to the massive aid effort.
The official death toll from the South Asian tsunami, unleashed by a magnitude 9 earthquake off Indonesia on Dec. 26, has climbed to almost 150,000, with millions left homeless, hungry and threatened by deadly disease.

The American Red Cross said it received a $1 million donation from Bullock for tsunami relief in South Asia and East Africa. The star of "Miss Congeniality" and "Speed" previously donated $1 million to the Red Cross in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

It's so cool she gave so much money.

2. So, do you think all wealthy people should give away assets or
just Hollywood stars and starlets (who tend to be Democrats)?

4. W has the wealthiest cabinet in history. I'd like to see their donations
I may not be easily impressed by celebrity, but to diss a good deed just because it comes from Hollywood reveals an obsessive hatred that will eat at you and your friends .
Good for them and let's see what your buddies pony up.

10. She didn't have to give anything
There are plenty of other Hollywood celebrities who have as much or even more and you don't hear about them donating a million dollars. I think it's wonderful that she's so generous.

14. Exactly right.
And hopefully, more celebrities and people who are very well off will be inspired to do the same.

11. You know little...
about liquid assets. Her "cool" million you speak of is probably a lot less than that, and of the money she does have, she most likely only has immediate access to 5-10% of it. The rest of it is in property, bonds, stocks, and her production company. Any way you slice it, giving 1 million dollars is a very nice thing to do from a person who is in no way obligated to help. Also, even if she had her "cool" million dollars under her mattress, she gave 1% of her total assets. When you give a dollar for every hundred dollars you have (in total assets, not just cash), then we'll talk.

9. Leonardo donated to UNICEF, does giving to the UN
agency make the UN look more legitimate?

If so, that's where I want to give my money. Any thoughts on that?

12. I will not support a UN agency.
I know this is a spot of contention among liberals, but I do not trust the UN. Rwanda. Somalia. Bosnia. Iraq sanctions. There are other outlets for aid that do not have a track record of ineffectiveness.
