1. so he was actually riding the wave? standing up?
the article did not make that clear but even if he rode in on his belly, that is amazing.

3. He was apparently on the board some way some how
His wife Vicki and son Jake looked on in horror from a hotel balcony as he crashed toward the shore. Miraculously, he stayed atop his board until he reached the hotel, jumped off and waded to safety as the ocean rolled back to feed a much larger tsunami wave on its way.

8. That is what I thought too.
That California surfer guy somehow catches a wave FROM Hawaii to the island, then catches another wave out again. Hm.

9. Catch a wave and you're sitting on top of the world
But I don't think this is what the Beach Boys had in mind when they sung that song!

10. Hawaii invented surfing --
and the story goes that a chief (or perhaps a commoner) was pulled out to sea with the first wave, he sees a plank and gets on the plank and rides it back to shore and safety and thus surfing was born.

Anyway surfing and Tsunami have long be associated in Hawaii -- and the world's championship surfing contests began on Makaha Beach in the 1950s.

Interesting that this story of the origins of surfing has been reinforced by a modern day surfer who rides the wave safely to shore.
