SO, where CAN I shop???
I'm new here and I have been trying to catch up on which stores to avoid and which I can patronize. But living in a small town, I am limited. I certainly don't want to feed the beast, but I do have to feed my family.

So look at the list and tell me if I have any hope...

Walmart - BIG NO NO }(
K-mart- ?
Lowes - ?
Walgreens - ?
Penneys - ?
Dillards - ?
Sears - ?
HyVee - ?
Food 4 Less - ?

Coming to town in the Spring:
Target - ?
Kohls - ?
Home Depot - ?
Sams Club - I know, child of Walmart empire

THANKS

1. Good question.
Target's a no, I remember that one.

Let's see if someone posts the link to the website devoted to the political contributions of different companies. It was on the homepage of DU the other day, but my brain is crapping out and I can't remember the URL.

8. Then someone did post to support Target because the SA officials
have been skimming off the top and taking antiquities from donation centers for themselves.

4. Though they were arguing earlier that Target
is decent to its employees. That may make it somewhat okay to shop there.

11. I was going to say the same thing.
My brother worked there for several years, and the wages were much better than the local Wal-Mart (that's not really saying much). They also have a system where money is given to local schools, so it's not like Wal-Mart where all of your money is going out-of-state.

I'd be interested in discussing this further; I've been worried what I'm going to do without Target all week.

13. i can't NOT shop at target
i'm in too far with their Method detergents and their way cool design. it does seem like employees are treated well there. same with our local kmart -- ever since the martha debacle and the scene in blowing for columbine with kmart agreeing to not sell bullets i have been a HUGE fan. and martha's stuff there is very well designed.

kmart bonus -- the associates always flirt with me there which is downright cute. it makes me think that they are having a good time working there when they stop to be helpful and cute and nice.

7. I'm surprised everyone says "no" to Target
I thought they were pretty decent.

I think Lowe's is okay too.

But the number one rule you should follow is buy from locally owned stores.

There is a group in my state called Vest Pocket. It is all small locally owned businesses. They publish a list of members, even a map of where to find them.

You can almost tell by what they sell how conservative they are. Scapbook stores? Religious, conservative in my area. Health food stores? Liberal.

Check out small stores. You'll find some cute things and meet some neat people. I've been shopping locally for 10 years. One of the things I like the best is that in the really small stores, I see the same people every time I go it. You get to know the owners.

15. Yes.
I shop at the local hardware store, and a local lumber yard.

It was so funny the last time I went to that lumber yard. Of course they have storm doors, bathroom fixtures, and all the other stuff. But it is locally owned, and the people know us. I went in there to get some stuff for the bathroom we were remodeling, and they knew all about it, by word of mouth. They called me by my name, and led me right to the stuff I was looking for.
