I and my family refuse to shop there, and that's probably a few thousand dollars of revenue a year they could have had. Whether boycotters are having much impact or not is beyond my ability to know, but it's definitely having some.

I think your instincts are right, though: I doubt this is going to be anything short of a dismal retail season.

...so is overall retail. That sucks. The indicators aren't looking as good as the media were playing up.

The article says high energy prices may be to blame. Duh. Our home heating oil bills were outrageous before we switched to a heat pump. We'd be facing a pretty dismal Xmas if we still had to pay for oil.

10. I think it would be more of the economy than the boycotts

Because of a school project, I HAD to go to Office Depot (or Office Max...who can tell the difference) on Friday AM to get Printer Ink. The store is in a mini-mall that also houses Target, and there weren't that many cars in the lot to be 8:30am on the Day after Thanksgiving.

I happily boycott Walmart, as does the majority of my family, but I think lackluster sales should be "credited" to the fact that many people are out of jobs, or working for less pay than they were even last year, much less 4 years ago. I think that in the past 3 years or so, people have been willing to put Beginning of School and Christmas spending more on the Credit Cards than they'd like to. I think they don't have that option this year. I think Credit Cards are maxxed out this year. I think alot of people are feeling the pinch this year that maybe they haven't in past years.


On Edit---I was at school the other day talking with my classmates (avg age: 35) about Christmas. One brought up that she heard on CNN that the average family will spend $1500 or something on Christmas Presents---she says "What fucking family is THAT?" Not that those "average spending" numbers ever mean anything or reflect reality, I can tell you that NO ONE I know is going all out this Christmas. For the first time in my ENTIRE LIFE, my family is doing a 'choose a name' Christmas instead of the "everyone buy everything" shindig we normally do (I certainly don't mind the change!!). Everyone else I know (NOT exaggerating) is either doing home-made for Chrstimas or the pick-a-name thing as well. People are having a hard time this Christmas with presents. I wish I could credit this to the boycott, but I don't think that's it. Not out here in Rural USA where Walmart is as popular as Mom's house. People just don't have the $$

School supply sales were down earlier this year than projected numbers. People just DO NOT have the money to spend anymore. They can't use the CC because those are maxxed out, and they can't make the minimum payment anyways.

I am willing to pay a little more if I do not have to step foot in there. I have to shop at other discounters that are not much better but Wal-Mart sets the tone for all workers not just retail. The Big Three used to be the benchmark now Wal-Mart is, so I avoid them as much as possible.

I am not claiming to be a economist or a business expert but I think if all the retailers paid a living wage and sacrificed a little bit of profit for it inflation and prices could remain in check.

It is an outright disgrace that the nations largest employer outside the Government pays such appalling wages.

12. Last year they did great while everyone else suffered. I think that was

because the econpmy was so bad people shopped there because they are so much cheaper than everyone else. This year though, either the economy is horrible - in which case everyone will do horrible this year - or the boycott is working - in which case only Walmart will suffer. Still have almost a month before Xmas. We'll see then which way it's going.

to inform the public of all the labor abuse charges that have been filed against Walmart? It would get a lot of press if people just started popping up at Walmarts with picket signs and literature. They'd feel it in the pocketbook too.

20. In a very small town just north of my city (Colorado Springs)

the town of Monument, Colorado, voted against allowing Walmart to build a supercenter within their town limits. There was an offer for them to build half a mile down the street where the town had zoned specifically for a large store, but the corporation decided they wanted to build right next to these small shops and restaurants.

The people of Monument (which is like 89% Republican) voted against allowing Walmart to build on that location. The store just up and left and hasn't bothered Monument for over a year.

A hard-core Republican friend of mine once remarked in conversation "I don't know why people get mad at Walmart for closing down family businesses, I mean every time I go past a Walmart I never see any of 'em". My cool Republican friend (someone I respect very, very much) replied in a flash "there's a REASON for that!".

I'm in the "below poverty" level right now, and if it weren't for Target and Walmart, I'd likely have nothing right now. I don't have much, but it's better than nothing.

The one thing I like about Walmart is the fact that I can put things on layaway. I love Target, and it's by far a much better place for me to go, but without a layaway, I can't afford any large ticket items. I need a new sewing machine, and I've asked my mom for a gift certificate for Walmart so I can put one on the layaway. It's the only way I'll ever get a new one.

When you don't have any income to spend other than on bills and life's necessities, it's nice to be able to buy something on a time plan so that it can actually be bought.

23. I've been boycotting walmart for some time now.

Recently, though, my husband won a gift card at work for walmart, so I spent it (it wasn't my money, and I refused to buy even one dime more than the card). I have to say, just being in the store gave me a headache. I hope my husband's company comes up with a better incentive - shopping at walmart is just too stressful for me - I hate it.

I have vowed never to go there again, and make a point to tell local shopkeeperes that I will not patronize wallmart.

I was at an equine fair and overheard the subject of buying American came up a few people talking with an older securuty guard. I think the discussion was about cars, but I stepped in and said "You won't find any American made products at Wallmart and I won't enter their stores." The group in the discussion with the guard looked puzzled and the guard said, "You know, you're right." Sort of shut the discussion down, but the point was made.

Boycotts on walmart will NEVER hurt them. For every one of you who boycotts walmart, there are 1000 more people who do shop there.

Have you stopped to think that:
1. we are in a recession
2. millions of Americans are without jobs
3. millions more Americans can't afford to go shopping on a whim anymore

Find evidence to prove your thread title...that specifically states that boycotts hurt walmart. All this article does is say their sales are down: so what, you didn't make that happen.
