Has anyone seen one of those "Boycott France" stickers?
What a laugh. As if we're in the position to boycott anyone anymore. I can't believe people are still on that.

29. For the first time in my life, I couldn't possibly live with anyone ...
... who supports this corrupt, fascist regime. In my 60+ years, I've never been a partisan and never held as strong an opinion regarding political corruption in this country. These are extreme times, indeed.

16. Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn....
Both owned by Acor, a French hotel conglomerate.

Bubba Joe Billy Bob and Betty Sue from Hog Holler, (insert abbreviation of any Red State here) probably never knew they were ruttin' around on a French owned bed when they went on their fancy honeymoon at the Motel 6.

Perhaps they concieved a baby on their wedding night who will grow up to be a French chef and change his name from Billy Bob to Guillaume-Robert, n'est pas?

17. If you're buying Bordeaux, buy the 2000 vintage....
It's the best year in decades. This is one of the vintages you can keep for 10 to 20 years, depending on the producer. Great stuff.

2003 was also very good year...just coming in now. Avoid 2001 & 2002 vintages.

18. I was in Paris last Dec,
and American companies are not exactly front and centre in the country. First off, Starbucks wasn't even there until this year, McDonalds was always packed with Americans and I don't even think KFC exists there, I didn't see any and I was keeping my eyes open for that sort of thing. There is a huge anti-american sentiment over there especially when talking to just regular hard-working people. In fact the only person that I talked to who supported Bush was a Le-Pen supporter - go figure.

25. There is not "huge anti-American sentiment" in France....
I spend considerable time there for business and leisure (my mom was French and I visit relatives there often) and there is no wide-spread anti-American sentiment.

Do the French look unfavorably upon American foreign policy? Of course. Do they look unfavorably upon Americans and treat them poorly simply because they are Americans? Of course not.

I'm sure there exceptions to the rule, but I am really quite puzzled by this "anti-American" sentiment you say you encoutered.

26. Well,
I was only there for one week, so obviously you know it a bit better, but I found that we were being treated quite poorly by a lot of french people - simply because they thought we were American. Once they found out that we were from Canada, the service imporved dramatically, no matter where we were - the airport, restauraunts etc. I find that to be pretty anti-american and a disgusting habit on their part. For a country that relies on a lot of American tourist dollars, they shouldn't be judging every anglophone tourist that comes their way. I love France and French culture very much, but I do take issue with French citizens who feel they can dump on Americans.

15. This boycott nonsense is having little to no effect.....
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 10:06 AM by KzooDem
I work in the food/beverage import business and it is my business to know this stuff since we import from French suppliers.

After the war first started and the anti-war stance of France was high on the radar screen (back in the Freedom Fries days), there was a very brief ripple effect. Actually, if you look at the import volume data from that period, there is only a very, very slight decrease in incoming container traffic from France. Most of the hulabaloo was a result of - can you guess??? - media hype.

It appears that when the big "boycott France" thing really took off, there were just as many intelligent, thinking Americans who went out of the way to buy French products and services that offset the ogres who were screaming "boycott France." So, the net effect on trade with France was a tiny, almost imperceptable blip on the radar screen.

Today, there is little or any effect any boycott of French products is having on international trade with France. Any fluctuation oen way or another can pretty much be attributed to other market influences, and not because of some culturally myopic asshole in Freeperland refusing to stay in a Red Roof Inn or wash their hair with l'Oreal.
