Student's shirt spurs review of rules,,,, one tuff kid!
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 07:16 PM by bahrbearian
A school's decision to order a student to cover a political statement on a T-shirt has led the Appoquinimink School District to plan a review of its policies to ensure free speech rights are balanced against the educational mission of the district.

Freedom of speech issues will be addressed at the district level on a case-by-case basis while the guidelines are reviewed, officials said Monday.

Once the review is complete, a guide will be developed, and administrators will get training to ensure consistency and legal compliance.

1. Case by case
yeah right! If the young man had a tshirt on that said how wonderful bush is, there wouldn't have been anything made of it, most likely. I hope that guy keeps on wearing that shirt (after its been washed) and keeps on fighting for his right to free speech. If I was his father, I'd consider a lawsuit if the anti and pro bush people aren't treated equally.

4. Equal protection ...

Whatever policy they draft, it must treat each student and each message equally. If they feel that messages on shirts are a distraction, they should probably just ban any clothes with words, pictures or drawings on them.

Of course, I'm an advocate of school uniforms. So I'm kind of biased on the matter.

5. Good Job.
I might have done the same sort of thing if my Kerry shirt hadn't gotten such mean looks.
