WW II Germans Were Pigs
We look back on the behavior of German citizens during World War II and denounce their indifference to the actions of the Wehrmacht. But Americans today refuse to acknowledge that our war policies encourage atrocities. Just as we now denounce the World War II Germans, other generations will denounce us . . . and for the same reason.

The Bush government, with its long-standing contempt for the Geneva Conventions, is ultimately responsible for the killing of unarmed prisoners in Fallujah. However, it is not going to put itself on trial. Military lawyers are looking for a way to court-martial that Marine without blame spilling over on the system as a whole.

They will have to come up with a specific violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, such as an explicit prohibition against shooting prisoners. My understanding is that the troops were told to shoot anything that moves. John Kerry denounced such free fire zones as an atrocity in themselves - which indeed they are. Military authorities will probably charge the Marine with a violation of Article 134 - conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.

3. Here's the thing about Germans under Hitler:
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 02:10 PM by Minstrel Boy
until the grim reality of the war set in, apart from the politicized, the Jews and other targeted minorities, life seemed normal, and actually, pretty damn good compared to the depression, the humiliation of defeat and the horrible losses of the First World War. (For instance, read about the "Strength through Joy" program.)

Most Americans won't know they're living under despotism until it's too late.
