The "Red states ARE full of ignorant goobers so why deny it" thread
I think our strategy has to work around the fact that the red state Bush voters are ignorant goobers and will turn out in big numbers.

I know people are saying we have to stop insulting them but we can't pretend to think anything else than what is true. We will just have to find a way to incorporate that fact into our strategy without pandering.

Use this thread for ideas, or if you want to chime in about what else is TRUE about Red State Bush voters feel free.

1. red state bush voters == blue state bush voters
Why not call this thread, "The 'Blue states ARE full of snobby, self-important windbags so why deny it' thread"?

The more we use the terms "red state" and "blue state", the deeper our hole gets.

Meanwhile, read this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=1345639

3. Thank you!!
Thank you pmbryant! It's such a blow to me everytime I heard this red v blue stuff!!
I have this argument again and again: Even in the red states it was close!!!! On average about 40-48% of red state votes went to Kerry. Truly, if you look at the map county by county, we are all purple!!! And this, I believe, is with fraudulent voting activity on part of the Repubs.

Yes there are f*ing crazy people in this country, and yes we should be shocked and ashamed and doing something about it. But I, as a very blue red stater, insist that we have to stop this Blue v. Red thing. Oh please, dear blue staters, fight the real enemy!! BUSH&CO!! Even his followers were
lied to...his only moral value is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!! They are fooled by him. But they are not the only ones residing down here!

A good percentage of Kerry's supporters are in red states. A good
percentage of "Anybody But Bush" supporters are down here! Don't close the doors or drop the bombs on us yet. You blue states don't know how lucky you are that you can just blame us and look no further. We down here have to look further.

Don't mean to rant but I am really tired of here blue v red. Blaming us and kicking back won't help.

6. Ha! Good one.
Yes, we Blue Staters are getting a bit obnoxious and snobby. I confess I'm as guilty as the next man. I loved the US of Canada/Jesusland picture. I guess regional chauvinism is a much easier method of coping, than coming to terms with the fact that a massive number of people, permeating every part of the country, are certifiably insane. My apologies to any Red Staters who have been offended by these attitudes.

11. I got a call this weekend from a good friend in
Georgia. She's a pub and we manage to keep those types of discussions civil but she was reading about all the red state/blue state insults. I told her I understood her point but asked her how she would feel if all she heard for the last 3 years was "anybody who doesn't support * is unpatriotic, treasonous, etc". I also asked her why she thought all the states that had the most to lose on 9/11 all voted Kerry. She admitted she hadn't really thought about it and that she thought it was a good point.

Meanwhile, she still voted for the chimp.

8. I agree.
Refer to them as red voters, or those who voted for Bush. The differences between so-called 'red states' and 'blue states' are pretty nigh non-existent, especially in those states where the margin of Bush's win or loss was a few measly percents. Fully half of America's voters voted for Bush, and those voters weren't confided to specific states - you'll find them in each and every state in the Union.

I'm all for calling those who voted for Bush ignorant, stupid, and callous - but those appellations cannot be used on the state they live in, because so many of their family members and neighbors coted for kerry.

5. Not ALL of us are ignorant goobers...

I will admit that we probably have more than our fair share. I run into them all day long. Usually they're driving school-bus sized SUV with a W-04 or Bush/Cheney sticker on it. But remember there are folks in the red states who voted for Kerry so please don't generalize. In a many red states Kerry received at least 40% of the vote so hope is not completely lost!

In Arkansas, our state legislature has a Democratic majority even though the state's electoral college votes went to Bush. I wish I could explain how that happened but I can't.

I think the problem lies in the 'winner take all' electoral college system. I think this has accentuated and propelled divsion within our country. I'm sure other blue state minded folks residing in red states will agree that we feel very very alienated and don't enjoy being lumped with the "ignorant goobers"! Splitting the electoral college votes so they are reflective of the percentage of popular votes cast would be much fairer!

9. You are correct for the most part.
The red states are more rural. A majority of the people are sadly ignorant of world events. Since I live in a red state, I deal with them everyday.

My informal poll shows that most around here still believe Saddam Hussein was instrumental in the 9/11 attack and swear he did possess WMD until just before we attacked. No amount of evidence will change their belief.

I am always thinking of that Gene Wilder line from Blazing Saddles: "These are simple people, people of the land. You know, morons".

12. there are also an awful lot of Kerry voters in red states . . .
this business of bashing an entire state because the majority voted for Bush (or at least the voting machines did) ain't gonna win us any friends, and may well turn a lot of current friends off . . . lets just talk about goobers wherever they may be (and, as a New Yorker, I can tell you for a fact that they're everywhere) . . .
