Fundamentalists... as much as a threat to America as Al Qaeda?
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 08:12 PM by D__S
Same clowns... different circus.

Religious extremists whom believe that their deity is the only true God and all others must comply with their beliefs and wishes or suffer the consequences. That society must be held to their standards even if it has to be forced upon them.

The terrorists aren't just overseas. They're here as well and have been a long, long time before 9/11/04.

4. I think the Religious Right is more dangerous....
they have more soldiers on the ground in the U.S. ... and they are dedicated to doing more long-term damage.

Of course, take that comment with a grain of salt - they're not actively trying to kill people ... yet.

7. They have crossed the line into killing people
There are fundamentalists that have shot and killed a number of doctors, and a support network kept that one in North Carolina hidden for a number of years.

13. Eric Rudolph. He worked in Brevard, NC, for my roofer for a few months.
Of course my roofing contractor did not realize who it was. Rudolph was clean-shaven at that time and a good roofer. My contractor showed me correspondence from the FBI and other law enforcement agencies about Rudolph. For several months of that time, Rudolph was right under the noses of the FBI, working on roofs in upscale Conostee Falls (a gated golfing community in the mountains outside of Brevard).

I think that scenario is unlikely to happen (although I certainly wouldn't rule it out.. "Stay alert, stay alive").

Why use force when you can legislate or restrict one right at a time over time?

2. an essential reference on fundamentalisms
People concerned about the effects of religous fundamentalisms should get the "Fundamentalism Project" series from the University of Chicago. The first volume is "Fundamentalisms Observed".

The scope of the series is much too extensive to summarize quickly. But people concerned especially with the future of the US or or the Middle East should read the series.

Besides the Christian fundamentalism we are all familiar with, it also deals with Jewish fundamentalism, Islamic fundamentalism, and Hindu fundamentalism.

impairment as a result of years of brain washing influences from their
church related experiences. Their psychosis is causing catastrophic results for the human race. It must be identified as the illness that it is and that it has become pandemic.

14. Falwell is FAR from the worst of them...................
all you have to do is Google "dominion theology" or "biblical reconstructionism" or R J Rushdoony or Gary North...........take a gander and see what is in store for all of us. These people have as their goal a total theocracy based on old-testament laws and punishments, typically stoning to death for blasphemy/heresy and such, burning at the stake for sex before marriage, death by lethal injection or electrocution or stoning or burning for anyone who is not a practicing Biblical Reconstructionist(and yes, they mean the VAST MAJORITY of humans on earth who are not Christian fundies.....they basically advocate MASS GENOCIDE). They do NOT believe in government as it is now, they do NOT believe in the Constitution. The DO seek to quietly infiltrate the legislatures and local government in order to work from within to get what they want. Numerous government functionaries have links to these people. Mark my words, the fun is just beginning.

18. The first step in understanding the mental condition of
religious extremists is to realize that their brains have been altered by years of conditioning by their church affiliations. Just as victims of post traumatic stress syndrome have actual altered chemical states in their brains, the religious fundies have physically changed the natural flow of their cognitive processes and with tragic results for all of us.

"religious extremists is to realize that their brains have been altered by years of conditioning by their church affiliations.

It follows along the belief of lack of free thought and compliance with the collective beehive... non-compliance and individualism will not be tolerated. Where have I seen, read or heard about this before?

22. Far more of a threat. The odds of you being hurt by al-Qaeda are small
IF al-Qaeda exists at all, it is a pretty small group....expecially now that the First Fool has eliminated 3/4 of them.

Your odds of being hit by lightening are probably higher. Your odds of being hurt by RW extremists is far greater.

I manage every time I get behind the steering wheel.

It's the threats and usurpation against the Constitution and Bill of Rights that concerns me.

The "Fundies" and Religous Right would just as well wipe their ass with it and replace it with their own manifesto or pogrom.

34. Why? BUSH has caused far more deaths of innocents than Al Qaeda has.
ANd BUSH will continue to cause far more deaths.

BUSH allowed Al Qaeda to win. TERRORISM does not mean KILL; it means to TERRIFY. And WHO has been using TERROR against Americans the past 3 years? BUSH.

WHO is taking away our civil liberties one by one? BUSH.

WHO says dissent = treason? BUSH.

Al Qaeda is small potatoes in comparison.

25. Read "The Battle for God" by Karen Armstrong
This is a scholarly, indepth analysis of Christian, Islamic and Jewish fundamentalism.

Fundamentalism is a modern political movement that takes traditional religious and theological themes and uses them to support the institution of the theocratic state.

A "must read" for understanding what we're up against.

The Fundamentalist Baptist Fascist Preacher.

The brainwashed Fundamentalist children.

The no negotiation of anything but the Bible as absolute truth.

If anyone here thinks it will not happen here; a theocracy, and homosexuality shoved back in a closet, delusion is your guide.

I know them, my friends were them, they do not accept anything but complete compliance. Watch, you will see.

Check out this great but chilling article:

http://cleveland.indymedia.org/news/2004/10/12982.php

Excerpts:

...Many Christian fundamentalists feel that concern for the future of our planet is irrelevant, because it has no future. They believe we are living in the End Time, when the son of God will return, the righteous will enter heaven, and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire. They may also believe, along with millions of other Christian fundamentalists, that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed -- even hastened -- as a sign of the coming Apocalypse.

... We are not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. The 231 legislators (all but five of them Republicans) who received an average 80 percent approval rating or higher from the leading religious-right organizations make up more than 40 percent of the U.S. Congress. These politicians include some of the most powerful figures in the U.S. government, as well as key environmental decision makers: Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Conference Chair Rick Santorum, Senate Republican Policy Chair Jon Kyl, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, House Majority Whip Roy Blunt, U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, and quite possibly President Bush.

...Like it or not, faith in the Apocalypse is a powerful driving force in modern American politics...

... In the past, it was not deemed politically correct to ask probing questions about a lawmaker's intimate religious beliefs. But when those beliefs play a crucial role in shaping public policy, it becomes necessary for the people to know and understand them. It sounds startling, but the great unasked questions that need to be posed to the 231 U.S. legislators backed by the Christian right, and to President Bush himself, are not the kind of softballs about faith lobbed at the candidates during the recent presidential debates. They are, instead, tough, specific inquiries about the details of that faith: Do you believe we are in the End Time? Are the governmental policies you support based on your faith in the imminent Second Coming of Christ? It's not an exaggeration to say that the fate of our planet depends on our asking these questions, and on our ability to reshape environmental strategy in light of the answers.
