Flag Stir
Student's art project that paints on U.S. flag causes stir
A student's anti-war art project has caused a stir at northeastern Indiana's Central Noble High School. Junior Eric Rapp's project depicts a US flag painted over with anti-war quotes from famous people. It was displayed at the bottom of a display case in the school's main hallway. Rapp created the project, which he calls "The Anti-War," for an advanced art class. Art teacher Sally Saul told her students to use visual imagery to show their reaction to a song, poem, quote or political issue. Rapp says the project represents his belief that war is never right or just. He says he used a flag because he knew it would get more attention. It did. Someone taped an anonymous letter to the display case criticizing the project. The letter that the project was disrespectful of the sacrifices made by US troops in Iraq. The flag -- and other contents -- were removed from the display case by Thursday morning.
