"most serious threat to God's green earth that we have seen"
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 07:24 AM by G_j
With a multitude of reports from the world's top scientists, few are arguing that global warming is not real anymore. Given the recent report that Arctic ice is melting twice as fast as previously thought, the alarming Pentagon report etc. the 'candidates' obsessed on the "war on terror". Yet this is the issue that threatens the planet as no other. As Speth states, "We need a movement, a powerful new force akin to the civil rights movement of the 1960s."

Global warming a dire threat, ex-presidential adviser says

By James Bruggers

The Courier-Journal

Global warming "poses the most serious threat to God's green earth that we have seen so far," a former environmental adviser to Presidents Clinton and Carter warned yesterday in Louisville.

At a Festival of Faiths breakfast, James Gustave "Gus" Speth, dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, spoke of dire environmental and economic consequences later this century if global warming isn't checked.

He said some of the uncertainty about global warming has diminished in recent years, and now there's a greater need for people of faith and others to lead politicians in state capitals and Washington, D.C., toward a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, which many scientists identify as the main culprit.

Speaking to about 150 people at the Galt House, Speth said some people and businesses — and state governments — already are taking the matter seriously, while adding that it hasn't been enough.

2. Yeah, this is a Christian nation now!
When the ice caps melt it'll just drown the faggots. Everybody else will get carried up to Heaven in a spaceship. We should all be doing God's work by hurrying this along.

15. yeah, you're one of those "reality-based" people!
The GOP creates its own reality.

I heard George Bush say it himself!

(I'm not kidding, he did say this)

as it's many who proclaim themselves Godly who think it more important to exploit and destroy creation than to revere and preserve it --

8. They quit reading...
Somewhere around the "To hold dominion over all plants and animals" phrase in Genesis. That's all they needed to know.

5. let the nazipoos worry about it
in fact, hooray for global warming: to be able to tell them mindless assholes that shitting in their own nest by supporting the likes of hitler and bush creates a situation where no one believes nothing because bushitler etc require popular acceptance of blatant lies to succeed, and thus the cynical idea that allowing human extinction may be the ONLY WAY to fight evil...is obviously true

13. I mean that is
the real tragedy: a planet once teeming with natural beauty, a beautiful tapestry of diversity and wonder, 'paying' for our 'sins. The birds, the fish and all the rest...

what a crime

26. Nazipoos? Polar Bears? Coral Reefs?
Three Card Monty, with a twist...everybody loses.

I predict a Noah's Arc movement to gain strength and momentum to save frozen embryos, seeds etc, in recognition that we are going down, in a big way. A stawart surviving population of dedicated humans, just maybe, will have a chance to restore some degree of biodiversity. After the dust clears. In a blink of geologic time.

Hell, I can think of millions of idiot Christians who are giddy with the thought of being under water and constantly baptized in the name of Jesus!

11. and all of these effects will accelerate
causing, I believe major environmental catastrophes in our lifetimes.

I think of all of the record oil drilling and the huge finds in China and Iran. And I then reflect on the major earthquakes there . . .

12. Exposee on the evangelical impact on our env'al policy. SCARY!
http://cleveland.indymedia.org/news/2004/10/12982.php

Excerpts:

...Many Christian fundamentalists feel that concern for the future of our planet is irrelevant, because it has no future. They believe we are living in the End Time, when the son of God will return, the righteous will enter heaven, and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire. They may also believe, along with millions of other Christian fundamentalists, that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed -- even hastened -- as a sign of the coming Apocalypse.

... We are not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. The 231 legislators (all but five of them Republicans) who received an average 80 percent approval rating or higher from the leading religious-right organizations make up more than 40 percent of the U.S. Congress. These politicians include some of the most powerful figures in the U.S. government, as well as key environmental decision makers: Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Conference Chair Rick Santorum, Senate Republican Policy Chair Jon Kyl, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, House Majority Whip Roy Blunt, U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, and quite possibly President Bush.

...Like it or not, faith in the Apocalypse is a powerful driving force in modern American politics...

... In the past, it was not deemed politically correct to ask probing questions about a lawmaker's intimate religious beliefs. But when those beliefs play a crucial role in shaping public policy, it becomes necessary for the people to know and understand them. It sounds startling, but the great unasked questions that need to be posed to the 231 U.S. legislators backed by the Christian right, and to President Bush himself, are not the kind of softballs about faith lobbed at the candidates during the recent presidential debates. They are, instead, tough, specific inquiries about the details of that faith: Do you believe we are in the End Time? Are the governmental policies you support based on your faith in the imminent Second Coming of Christ? It's not an exaggeration to say that the fate of our planet depends on our asking these questions, and on our ability to reshape environmental strategy in light of the answers.

14. I'm beginning to think that unless a person takes an oath to protect the
environment and not let their personal beliefs trump their duties, that person should not be able to hold office. I won't hold my breath.

scary article indeed...

23. Dont Worry
When the earth floods from the melting ice caps, Nasa (under strict orders from the president) will build a modern day Noahs Arc, Christian groups will go around the globe collecting insects and animals spreading the word of jesus and warn locals of all the horrors that are coming. The Arc will take off from the grand canyon (as you know its now a biblical landmark) and with all our new space travel technology the Arc will hover in space until all is well on planet earth.

/seriously I hope the world will open their eyes and realize global warming is real.
