2. Can you imagine if the IRS operated like our national election process??
With a different form and process in virtually every county in the country?

This is L-O-N-G overdue.

12. I hope Sen. Kerry was watching this
Because Wes Clark just showed him a way to talk about fixing the voting system without sounding like a conspiracy theorist.

20. He talked about the need for people to know
that the system worked...

He discussed it from a left & right point of view, & it just made common sense.

As he always does, he framed it in an understandable way, with a solution.

14. Standardize voting? Sounds like a subversive idea.
I hope the 100%ers don't here it. ;-)

16. Not only standardized, but I strongly feel that we MUST push for two add'l
things:
1) We CANNOT have partisan Secretaries of State overseeing elections, and whomever IS overseeing elections MUST not be allowed to work for ANY candidate in ANY capacity. This shit with Katharine Harris and whatshisface, Blackwell, from Ohio, working for the Chimp's campaign, is just wrong wrong wrong, like everything else about the Reich Wing.

2)There should be NO private corporation coming between We the People and our votes. Elections should be run by non- or bi- or multi-partisan group and should NOT be a "for profit" gig at ANY stage of the process.

It should NOT be a difficult thing to standardize ballots (the format, I mean) in such a way that all each state/precinct needs to do is load in the correct slates of candidates, and it really should not hard to come up with an easy-to-read, easy-to-complete ballot!

I have never had a problem understanding ballots here in MN; how about folks from other states? What issues are there with your ballots, and what suggestions are out there for some standardized format?

17. i agree with everything you said.
I think the "old voting system doesnt work because people don't fill them out right" is complete horseshit. Not only that, but that meme was the driving force to the e-voting debacle we are now witnessing so it has suited the chimperor perfectly.

We are supposed to believe that in 2000, in Jeb Bush's Florida, the reason why the system didn't work was because people all of the sudden couldn't "do it right".

this is a nightmare.

18. Good BUT
it's NOT the ballots--it's the TABULATION that's a problem

HANDCOUNTING is the only solution.

19. Good points to start with
But also, electronic voting must be addressed. FACE IT, its here to stay. But I believe it can be done right as long as we address your points first.

GO WES! My Man. Wonder what he's got planned in '08? :)

21. I agree, 'puters are gonna be involved in some way, even if only to scan
paper ballots (which would be my preference.)
What if...the system designed to do that was created/overseen by a university maybe? Or what kind of organization could do this and have it be not for profit? Should it be a gov't agency/entity that handles voting?
What??? How can we make this system work?
I really think WE have to do it; it's in our best interests to be able to vote and to rely on an accurate tabulation, so I think it's our responsibility to come up with some workable solution(s) and then start working on getting them enacted.

23. Some of my thoughts...
but the system design and testing is too complex to solve here:

Large panel of experts from computer industry, security industry, and experts on BBV issues, to lay out a federal standard for design and testing systems.

Standalone voting machines (not networked).

Digital signing of databse files before they are extracted from voting machines. Guards against tampering.

I think that private industry will continue to play a roll in supplying voting systems.

I think the most important issue is eliminating political appointees as overseers of the election process which you already covered.

24. There has to be auditing, oversight by a nonpartisan third party
organization. Period. Or else even if they don't cheat with BBV, they will cheat the "legal" way having Repub election supervisors remove polling stations in black neighborhoods, or with "challengers" at polling sites, with eleventh hour challenges of perfectly legal voter registrations. All tactics used in OH among other places.

I saw some of the preliminary Michael Moore footage, and it was good. Even though we on DU know about all this voter suppression, in the "F11/2" sequel movie, Americans who are less well informed can see in living color how Republicans "win" elections.
