Poll question: Will Democrats rubber-stamp new Attorney General?
Granted Democrats don't have the majority, but will they rubber stamp this new AG, like they did with Ashcroft? There are some disturbing questions about his involvement with ignoring Geneva Convention.

1. Is there any other choice? How about the Greens? Will they object?

2. I think they'll let it slide, but they DO have a choice.
If you do not present opposition, you cannot win anyone over to your side. And that includes the public.

3. I thinkk they'll wait and see if there is an argument from any Pubs.
I would doubt this is one of the fights they want to start, but if some of the moderate Pubs argue against him, I think the Dems would happily join them.

4. I would imagine they'll do their jobs.
If that means confirming him, ok...If that means fighting against his conformation, ok.

5. They'll think:
Better than Ashcroft and way better than Ted Olsen ... even though Gonzales helped condone torture and other violations of Geneva Conventions.

6. Since they're in a pretty drastic minority, you can't expect them...
...to fight every fight they possibly could. They have to pick fights wisely, and Gonzales is an improvement over Ashcroft (I guess Mussolini would be too).

Now, how they got to be such a minority is at least in part due to their rubber-stamping habit, but that's a different story.

guy will be bad news for our country.

... will stop this nomination. He will slip in pretty comfortably, I fear.

He'll probably apologize that this joker has to answer "Duh Senator from Mussachsutts's unfair lahn of questuning" like he did with Ashcroft.....Sessions maybe the most disgusting Repugnatcon in the whole building, even more than Senator Sanctamonious and Vacant Lott.

11. Fight an AG that condones torture? Why would they do that?
It might cause the rightwingers to get upset. And, we all know that without pandering to the right we can't win. That's why we have President Kerry.

nahhh.. they'll roll over under the auspice of reaching across the aisle, and working to unify the nation. It's worked so well in the past, after all.

Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 04:04 PM by ibegurpard
then the Democrats should vote no. How does it hurt to cast a protest vote when it's a done deal anyway? Make the Republicans own this guy.
The question is will they.

17. What is wrong with you people?
The Democratic Party is dead. Leave it in peace.

All this posturing to suggest that someone in the Senate has a spine is just embarrassing to watch.

Let it go...

24. Hey, right now we have a two party system
I submit those of us who are proud to be Democrats need to kick out these pink tutu a**holes and fight. We need the Independents and the Greens, Left Libertarians, etc. to throw in with us for the short term.

THAT (taking back the Democratic Party) is the ONLY feasible short term way to deny the Republicans from *RULING* our entire country.

We need to immediately start defining how our values are different from Republican ones; and a great place to start would be pointing out that pro-torture AG's are incompatible with Domocratic values.

22. This was a smart choice by Rove & Co.
Cynical, very cynical, but a very smart and sneaky choice by Rove & Co. Choosing a hispanic will likely deflect almost all of our opposition that we could possibly have had, and I'm sure that's what they are betting on.

26. Please!!! Let's stop lamenting and kick-out our gutless
Democratic Leaders. The ONLY way to CHANGE this system is through a strong Democratic party. We need everyone's help.

You are playing right into the radical right wing's master plan by giving up.

27. Bingo, they never run to the center, and win constantly...
Since the DLC and party moderates are so fond of GOP emulation on platform issues, it's ironic they don't emulate what would actually work in winning elections - appealing to their base with a charismatic progressive message.

Win or lose, however, they still get paid. And they get to socialize with all those cool, connected Republican friends of theirs!

will immediately be spun as being anti-hispanic and how "inclusive" GOPers are (gays and lesbians excluded due to their GOP assest as a divisive group and wedge issue ummmm unless we need their vote -- meanwhile stay in the back of the tent)
