I'm trying not to get too sucked into the red state/blue state false dichotomy (that plays into the right-wing politics of division), but there are certainly some truths to the stereotypes. People in "red states" do want to control the culture, or they are angry, or something, and the red states themselves also tend to be poorer.
Think about how stupid the position of a state like Alabama really is . . . they are massively subsidized by people in big cities on the coasts, and many of those people would like to provide universal health care. Since red staters are also less healthy than people in blue states, this would represent a massive outpouring of money from the cities to the rural poor.
And those rural poor refuse to accept this. They think it violates their principles to have health care untied from employment.
Think about the irony of that.
My apologies to DUers trapped in red states. But it just boggles the mind.
