democratic moral values: do unto others as you would have them do unto you
I know I'm being naieve, but I keep thinking that there must be a way to make the Democratic Party more attractive to the so-called moral values voter without alienating the base. Or at least to change the nature of the dialogue in the media. My idea: hammer away that the Democratic Party is the party of the Golden Rule: Do to others as you would have them do to you. Its a simple message that resonates deeply, and is consistent with the party's tradition of tolerance and liberty.

In contrast, the Repubs are the party of a much different standard: Do unto others what you want them to do (or, even more appropriate, he who has the gold rules).

Just a thought.

Actually could be a winning strategy. Lots of dems think too much. This is simple and to the point!

2. today especially i will reverse that
do onto others as we want done onto us. that is the problem. the fundies want us to live what they believe. what i want done onto me, is not necessarily what another wants done onto them, i assure you.

simple example i dont want abortion done onto me, so saying would suggest all others shouldnt have abortion. i think that i cant decide what others have done onto them, it is theirs to decide, and live the repercussions or grace of it. i can only do what i want done onto me

6. it's all in the phrasing and context
in your example, you choose to not take a certain path. The real story is that you should not take the right to make that decision away from someone else, as you would not have it taken from you.

When it comes down to it, this message is really right in line with tolerance and respect, the values that have always been at the core of being a progressive (IMHO).

8. another example why do onto to others doesnt work
i dont like to celebrate bdays., i dont like the attention. my kids do. they have to do it my way, not theirs with my bday, i have to do it their way, not mine, on their bdays

another

i want it straight and from the heart in love. i dont take personally, i know where someone stands.

if i talked to people my way, to them, well, i would have a handful have issue with it. cnat be my way, has to be their way, for them to hear

10. The archaic language confuses many
"Doing unto others" in the case of abortion does not mean that you perform an abortion on someone else just because you want someone to perform an abortion on you.

The real issue her, what we REALLY want people to do for US, is to recognize our right to make these decisions for ourselves, and not to have that decision imposed on us. Just as you want others to respect YOUR right to decide, you should also DO UNTO OTHERS by respecting THEIR right to make this decision and NOT force others to live by YOUR beliefs, just as you would want them to force YOU to live by THEIR beliefs.

5. Nice thought; won't work.
Republicans respond in a human fashion only when they are suffering.

Simple karma:

7. Will that apply to abortion?
When it comes to abortion the Repubs seem to be alreay using the Golden Rule...way ahead of you...

Isn't the "Golden Rule" a Hebrew saying or something?

you go strongly with the golden rule. the democrat wants one clone of a person, just as the repugs do. just we are seeing the creation of the clone on the repug side, pretty damn scary, to be a clone of the dems, that they suggest, is just as scary to me, just doesnt mess with ones spirituality..............
