Ashcroft: why so soon?

CNN website is reporting that a new AG may be named as soon as today. Yes, they've had at least a whole week to scout for a replacement.

But one has to wonder why Ashcroft is so eager to pack up. Tell me that I'm wrong to speculate that there might be some material about his lack of ethical conduct that's about to go public, and he doesn't want to be around for it or appear that he's resigning for anything but honorable reasons.

5. I think you are right - although, I think they'd want someone younger.
That way they would be making RW/Conservative decisions for the next 40 years.

9. That's what I would think,
but he's too old and very sick(I've heard). The neocons need YOUNG SC nominees.

10. Ohio, center of terrorist activity
i read that rural ohio was considered high risk (9 out of 10 threat) by homeland "security" for "terrorist" activity to disrupt the election. Rural Ohio? This allowed officials to keep election observers at a distance. Much easier to manipulate the results if no-one is looking. clever.

8. I guess he is like that Clint Eastwood Character
He rode into town, cleaned out the bad guys, and moved on.

I never got a chance to thank him, but he did leave this bad song behind about soaring wth eagles.

11. Am very concerned about his expected replacement, Alberto Gonzales.
Bush's White House Counsel and right hand man. You can wager there will be no Justice Department investigations of the Bush/Cheney administration in Bush's second term with Gonzales at the helm.

This would indeed be "Bush's style."

14. Could this have something to do with the unredacted 9/11 report?
I heard the juicy parts were being held until after the election, the parts that were going to name names and assign negligence.

IIRC, Ashy perjured himself during the hearings.

16. Perjury certainly has a nice ring to it.
We can always hope. His exit does seem a bit hasty.
