27. The republicans have it much easier, apparently.
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 03:16 AM by 0rganism
Here's the republican position in a nutshell.

"Homosexuality: a disgusting contagious disease."

This is basically it. Everything else, the gay marriage bans, the motions to prevent gays from becoming teachers, religious racial minorities who take offense at the notion of GLBT equality as a serious civil rights movement, it all follows from this superliminal conservative concept of homosexuality as perverted abomination avoidable through devout religion and proper hygiene.

While a lot of what was said above is decent, honorable, and respectful, there are generally two problems with the many variations on "live and let live" or "none of your beeswax".

1) They don't speak to the concerns of a majority of Americans, who are constantly hearing from the republicans that homosexuality is dangerous insanity with an agenda of corruption and pedophilia.

2) They don't actively correct the persecution of homosexuals, who are denied equality in their relationships, treated as second-class citizens, abused and reviled by people who would otherwise be their peers.

The neutral "centrist" position is fundamentally unsatisfying to both the religious and the GLBTs.

> What do YOU think the position should be?

To answer your question, here's something close to what I think the position should be: "All minorities receive equal protection."

As to what it actually is? Hell, I don't know. Some Democratic leaders support true procedural equality, some Democratic leaders support civil unions in lieu of marriage to be less offensive to certain constituencies, some Democratic leaders think homosexuality is an abomination just like Moses says it is. I would say the current predominant version is much closer to Robert Oak's: "Whatever gets us elected."

28. Homosexuality: Not A Moral Issue
The only moral issue that should or even can be addressed on this topic is the "hatred" permeating our society by ignorant and naive humans.

It is morally wrong to spread hatred.
It is morally wrong to act on that hatred.

Homosexuality itself is not a moral qualifier, just as being a woman or hispanic cannot be measured in moral terms.

Even if you believe in a God, let your God judge them and get on with your fucking lives. That's his/her job, not yours. Gay people are not hurting you in anyway, so leave them alone. Your God probably also tells you to not be such a dick to others. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you like to be picked on your entire life because of the way you were born? How would you like it if you couldn't visit your dying spouse in the hospital or lost your house and joint property when he or she died? Think about the roots of your negative feelings toward gays (hatred, ignorance, fear, and taking pleasure in putting someone else down and having a whipping boy) and what side of yourself you're indulging when you act on them.

56. Most of you are giving your own position, not the Party's
I don't know what the platform says, if anything, about GLBT issues, but John Kerry did NOT advocate equal rights for us because he is opposed to same-sex marriage. Now while I get that he had to say that to have a prayer of winning, it cannot be said that the Party, through its candidate, advocates equal rights for gays and Lesbians. Fairness, maybe, but not equality.

73. The Democratic Party Is Universally Inclusive
Of all people. It makes not difference if a person is homosexual or heterosexual, the democratic party has always been about inclusion of all people. It is the republicans that want to pick and choose who they want to associate with based on sexual orientation as well as many other things.
If you are thinking what i think you are thinking and find yourself leaning to wards a party that would tend to prohibit people based on their sexual orientations why don't I just save you some time and effort. See you are not trying to get the democratic party to modify their beliefs just to get elected, you, of course want to be elected but I have a very easy answer for you. If you find yourself always feeling your self wanting to alter homosexual behavior and ideology especially for the good of your party I strongly recommend you leave the democratic party immediately and sign up with George Bush and company as they despise homosexuals. They even tried to have the constitution amended to prevent gay marriage.
So if your problems is gays in general stop trying to micromanage someone else's life and beliefs. One thing is clear. The democratic party is not for you.
