Maybe it's the cynic in me or the political strategist (those two are not always mutually exclusive, but that's another thread), but this doesn't past the smell test.
Arlen "Magic Bullet, Anita Hill Hearings" Specter is suddenly the voice of reason in the Republican Senate. Hah!
Yes, I know he's considered moderate, next to these clowns who wouldn't be? And I know he's had some tough re-election campaigns.
His little "vogue" on judicial nominees allows for the following:
1)The religously insane can froth at the mouth, hold prayer vigils, write letters, etc effectively showing any other Republican or Democrat not to grow a spine. Heck the country just voted for their point of view. (last statement for the sake of arguement)
The message here is we've got the power and the muscle to roll right over you should you try to stand up to us. And if you think that Dr. Dobson hasn't talked (read cleared) all of this with Karl Rove, then you haven't been paying attention.
2) George Bush can now nominate a "moderate" for a judgeship in order to "reach out" to "those who want to work with me". Most of Bush's nominees have been approved anyway. It's only the most outrageous that the Democrats in the Senate have managed to filibuster.
The media gush all over the "new spirit of bi-partisianship". The general public agrees and the real problems with the fact that our court system has been drastically changed for generations is ignored.
