Reworked Florida Numbers
I've been looking at the data from this site:

http://ustogether.org/Florida_Election.htm

I passed it around to a few friends, and they were confused... so I reworked it a little bit for clarity.

http://www.rubberbug.com/temp/Florida2004a.html

What I wanted to see was what percentage of voters did each party gain over what was expected solely by registration.

Shocking.... Bush sees 50% "defection" rates from Democrats in a lot of counties.

2. I think you really are on to something
If you can look at the statistics (of who they voted for) and tell what mechanism they used or didn't use (with a pretty fair success rate), then something smells like three day old fish.

3. Where's Hillsborough?
According to my stats, Hillsborough encountered the largest anomaly in party registrations/voter returns. Bush had about 45k overvotes and Kerry had about 22k undervotes....!

4. Something to think about...
You really need to compare this with 2000. In the south there are quite a few very conservative Democrats. It stems from reconstruction. The Republican carpetbaggers wounded southern pride so badly that it has filtered down trough the generations. There are a lot of older southerners registered Democrat that are ultra religious and ultra conservative. Go figure.

I'm not trying to say your assumptions are invalid, just that you may want to analyze the 2000 numbers as well.

I know this sounds crazy but I was born and raised in the deep south.
