Two friends of mine. They don't know each other. One who voted for *, and another who sat out the election. Both asked my opinion of the outcome (as if they couldn't already surmise it). Both listened sympathetically to my despair. And then both told me that it didn't really matter to them either way, because their eyes were set on a Higher Authority. Whoever happens to be in the White House is irrelevant.
To put it in context: I'm in the South. The friend who voted for * is a born-again. The one who sat out the election is a devoted New Ager. Couldn't be less similar.
I admit this doesn't constitute enough to declare a "trend" from, but how weird to hear almost the same exact reply from two such distinct perspectives.
My reply to both was that, no matter how our spirituality may inform us, we live in this world and owe an obligation to it and all its inhabitants. Whoever sits in the seat of power is far from irrelevant - it's vital, in order to best serve the world and its people. Again, shrugs from both friends.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
