Here's an interesting idea from a talk show host.
A local talk show host in Lima, Ohio seems to be skeptical about Republicans' sincerity to ban abortions, and they only use it as a wedge issue against their Democrat opponents. Around here, it works like a charm in every election.

He's suggesting that a Democrat introduce legislation in the House and Senate that would ban abortion. He's arguing that the pro-lifers have had the ducks lined up to outlaw abortions but don't want to do it, for fear of exposing their real opinion on the issue. Make them show their cards.

I like the idea. I think it would turn things upside down between Congress and their constituents.

2. There's no way to use that to expose them
The repubs control what comes to the floor in both houses of Congress. Scheduling and time constraints can be used to block whatever they don't want to get into.

3. No, force the Repugs to do it.
A lot of them like having that as a wedge issue. That's why they haven't done a lot about it yet (over turning RvW, that is). The Fundies are starting to clammer about getting a return on their investment. However, if they do .. the REpublican party will have lost a very powerful talking point and way to get votes. So, they're not really going to want to do it ...

We, on the other hand, need to stick to our progressive ideals.

5. That's the talk show's point.
Flush 'em out. Call their bluff. Show the people who really is "pro-life."

That "pro-life" moniker is something of itself. Every Republican Congressman I've talked to in Ohio claims to be "pro-life," but they support Bush's war in Iraq. How inconsistent is that?

4. The Democrats need to develop their own wedge issue
Something that will divide the Republican party. Any ideas?

6. All their mistresses have had abortions.
It's a good idea, like Charlie Rangel introducing the draft bill and making all those Repubs vote against it before the election.

Hmmm.... takes balls to call a bluff like that. Does anyone have any?
