We need ballot measures
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 04:51 AM by Onlooker
Fundies keep tripping us up with their ballot measures, such as their antimarriage amendments. We need some good ideas for ballot measures and then need to organize around those issues.

Here are a few possibilities for such measures:
- One that sets up an independent commission that reviews church compliance with election laws.
- One that that restricts the amount of nontaxable land a church may own.
- One that implements more stringent gun control
- One that prevents tax money from being used for direct or indirect support of religion, specifically religious schools
- One that establishes how the vote will be conducted

These may not be the best ideas, but if we could come up with a good idea or two, we could present positions that would isolate the fundies and the rightwing Republicans.

2. "One that implements more stringent gun control"...
...without speaking to the rest of your points, I can tell you that one is a sure-fire loser for Democrats (no pun intended). Where it not for "gun control," The Democrats would probably control at least one branch of Congress right now, and President Gore would be entering his second term in office. This "gun control" business has got to be dropped by our side. All it's ever done is cost us votes - and political power.

3. Ooooooooooo...!
No, no, don't even begin to diss any of them -- you've got some very sweet ideas there!

Matter of fact, I like them all, very much (including the gun-control one -- and I am a happily-law-abiding gun owner, who doesn't mind a thorough background check and waiting period).

Every bloody last one on your list would stand an excellent chance of passing in California. No guarantees, of course, but you are really speaking to much of the California mindset with these.

Onlooker, out of curiosity, what state do you live in?
