Do we have an organization that actively opposes/watches the fundies?
I'm not talking just about a left-wing Christian group - I mean something that watches them and makes sure they follow the law re: their tax exempt status?
Or opposes them in any other way. Kind of an anti-Christian Coalition?

1. Closest I can think of
Is AU, Americans United. We need something to oppose that.

2. Americans United for Separation of Church and State...
AU.org...dedicates itself to making sure that they comply with the tax-code. Falwell got his status taken away once, and had to pay a fine.

They basically were behind the Christian Coalition getting their status taken away.

Check it out.

Theocracy Watch and PFAW.org (People for the American Way) also monitor the activities of the religious right.

3. If there is, sign me up.
They think they are being persecuted now?

They don't even know what persecution is. :grr:

5. I know how you feel!
I am really sick of these folks. They want the same kind of dictatorship
running this country that runs their organizations. They are frightened
and mindless, and want to control those of who are not.

6. No, but they're infiltrating progressive churches
"Rat Out A Church: Ending radical left-wing politics in the pulpit" www.ratoutachurch.org

Of course, we can always watch a megasecond of 700 club to get an inkling about whatthey're preaching from the pulpit. Geez, if Jerry Falwell says that stuff on national television, imagine what their ministers are preaching in the small churches accross the south and midwest! :eyes:

Yurica Report

(eg.)
The Despoiling of America

How George W. Bush became the head of the new American Dominionist Church/State
by Katherine Yurica

Most Americans have been aware that religious right Republicans have become extremely active politically in the last twenty years. But because we're Americans and we're mostly tolerant of other people's religious beliefs, their rise to power hasn't really troubled us. We should be troubled. There is now overwhelming evidence that conservative Christians set out to overthrow the government of the United States, dispense with our democracy, and institute in its place, a government ruled by Old Testament laws--including an expanded litany of death penalties. This article is not a conspiracy theory. It contains the legal elements required for the prosecution of any criminal or civil conspiracy in our nation. The proof is in this article. Dont miss this one.

Editor's Note:
Since the posting of "The Despoiling of America" on February 11, 2004, the Yurica Report has learned of two other articles, which when read with "Despoiling," add a deeper and more chilling layer to our report. Click on the red sign to go to an interview with Jeffrey Sharlet and click on the blue to read Sharlet's original article at Harper's Magazine.

12. Frightening and portentious
Especially since it's these people whose "values" put the shrub in the White House for four more years. We need media outlets to put
this information on the streets.

9. Quite a few, actually...
Not all devoted solely to the tax-exemption issue, but all monitor the radical religious right for just such violations:

10. Good to see links on this!
There should be a special section here at DU with resources on this subject now that people know what's up.

11. I confess...
I cheated and consulted my own built-from-scratch search engine -- which is actually a LGBT portal site, but the directory/search-engine end of it is really more a "liberal link library". (Heck, it's the best one I know of. LOL)

I'm at the end of rebuilding the entire thing, but if you want to bookmark it now and check it in another 2-3 weeks, it should be finished:

http://www.goqueer.com

Yeah, this is a blatant self-plug, but I wouldn't mention it if I didn't think it was an invaluable resource for all progressives (not just us gay folks).

And I think it's needed more now than it was two days ago.
