N.C. National Guard members tell of heat, danger in Iraq

Franklin's death marks the first time in more than three decades that the North Carolina National Guard has lost a soldier to hostile fire, guard officials said. More than 1,300 North Carolina Guardsmen are on active duty, many in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A tennis court near the compound has been converted to a holding pen with razor wire looping across the top of the chain-link fence. Overhead lights that once allowed tennis to be played at night keep the area lit.
"Tonight I have three thieves and two terrorists," Bishop wrote in one letter to his wife. "I'm looking at the moon. Everyone is asleep."
Sometimes Iraqi children sneak into the holding area, Bishop told his wife. She sent lollipops, Cracker Jacks and Oreo cookies for him to share with them along with Hot Wheel cars, magic markers and drawing books.
"One boy patted me on the back," he wrote. He thought nothing of it. Later he discovered a picture of Saddam Hussein taped to his back. "They have a sense of humor," he said.
