On Thursday January 6, 2005 the President of the Senate, Dick Cheney, will open and read the electoral votes from the 2004 presidential election before both houses of Congress.
We need to send a message to President Bush and to the Congress which says that getting the majority of the electoral vote, with a mere 51% of the popular vote for the President, and picking up a few more seats in Congress does not mean that Republicans should get 100% of their way on everything. The other 49% of The People have not disappeared. The other 49% will not be ignored.
I propose a general strike and work stoppage on this day, January 6, 2005, as well as having all participants in this strike refrain from making any purchases that day. Strike participants should stay home for the entire day, or if not, to the maximum extent that is practical, and make their absence from the daily business of our country as conspicuous as possible.
We need to make the Republicans know and feel the force of the Democrats and liberals whom they vilify, make them know we are a large and powerful presence. We need to teach them that Liberal is a proud and noble word, and that they can't get by without Liberals. We need to demonstrate the value to our society and to our economy of the higher education and intellectualism that liberals cherish, but which many conservatives scorn.

Does anyone else think that this strike could be a useful means of protest? Any guesses on whether or not we could build up sufficient interest and participation in such a plan to make it worthwhile?
