OK...help me find a new grocery store, esp. Florida people (Tallahassee)
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 12:14 PM by greekspeak
Publix, which I loved until I found out they are Pukes, was my store of choice. I cannot in good conscience shop there. I can go to Albertson's, or Harveys (AKA Food Lion), or Winn-Dixie. Those are my other three choices.

*Edited to include Tallahssee in Subject line. I appreciate the input I am getting A LOT...but we do not have CostCo or Kash&Karry here. I am looking into Target, which I have heard are left-freindly, as the store has groceries now, save produce.

22. We still have Kash-n-Karry in Pinellas County
And they are building a brand new store called Sweetbays, their new "flagship" store, I think...

I thought I heard their CEO supported Kerry. I could be wrong though I can't really think straight right now.

4. I miss Publix
I live in NC now and even if Publix is owned by the repugs... I love that store, best bakery, breads, deli hands down.

I wish we had that kind of quality here.

You don't have to agree with everyone, and you can choose where you spend your money, but I never understand the cut your nose off to spite your face reaction to things.

If it is the best store then go there. If you find an equal to or better than store, I would love to know about it.

7. I have explored the "cut off the nose to spite the face" angle
But I am NOT going to gallantly hand over my money so the people taking it from me can give it right back to the people who would like me to be non-existed.

6. Kash & Karry
They're also opening a new store in my neighborhood - Sweet Bay, I think. I'm considering going the Costco/fruit stand route.

10. My thoughts.....
Costco for staples.
El Bravo (Puerto Rican chain) for low-cost cleaning supplies.
Neighborhood fruit stand for produce.

I was really surprised to hear about Publix. They used to be my favorite store. The Jenkins family was always so philanthropic.

9. Well so much for Pubix
Screw them. Albertson's all the way. I'd go to a Winn Dickme, if they'd actually MOP THE FLOOR ONCE EVERY 9 YEARS!

11. Winn Dixie Chain...
used to be owned by Grace Nelson (Senator Bill Nelson's) wife's family. They have low prices but they are so dirty I always feel like I need to take a bath after I shopped there.

14. I used to regulary shop at
Winn-Dixie when there was a store right around the corner from me. I'd pick up a package of meat, take it home, open it, and it would smell rotten. And yes, I've never been in dirtier stores.

15. Look around for a Trader Joe's.
They're not political, and not unionized, but they treat their employees well and buy lots of free trade. They buy directly from manufacturers and sell a lot of stuff as store brands. They're one of the highest paying stores in the U.S. and I'm pretty sure they provide health insurance.

16. A couple of ideas...
The Tomatoland produce thingee near the Miracle 5 on Thomasville has some good produce. New Leaf Market is also somewhere you can go, although much of what they have nowadays is overpriced crap for yuppie spawn who want to be vegan to be cool. They do have some good bulk items, like rice and bulgar and such. Also, a new place called Fresh Market just opened where Wal-Mart used to be on Thomasville near Killearn. That might be your best bet.

I have only been there one time, and it was kinda seedy, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Publix has just spoiled me.

25. We have a nice Winn Dixie here.
I can either drive 30 miles to the Commissary, or go to WD or Walmart. Walmart is OUT, so don't say anything bad about WD lol!!

26. You don't have much of a choice
The consolidation of retail grocers into the hands of a few companies is rivaled only by the consolidation of media companies.

Harvey's and Food Lion are owned by Delhaize, a Belgian company that also owns Hannaford in the Northeast, a chain that first agreed not to advertise on Sinclair and then reneged.

Albertson's is a union-busting chain, so they are pukes by default.

Winn-Dixie is still an independent, but choose the location carefully: they rank below Publix and Food Lion on cleanliness, freshness and selection.
