Well, we took it where the sun don't shine. Here's what we can do for the future:
1. give up on the idea we can ever win in the South. Yeah, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, blah blah blah. Carter would NEVER win today. Clinton won the first time with 43% of the vote - and a big thanks to Ross Perot. The South is a pest hole of bigots, with pockets of good and decent people of both parties.
2. give up on the idea we need to "move to the center" - Gee, that idea has worked well since 1994, hasn't it? Plenty has been written about the fact that the US will pick real Repukes over Dem Repuke-wannabees - and it's all correct. We need to move more left - remember Kerry, though not a liberal, was perceived as one, and did OK.
3. concentrate our strength: spend money on moving people and jobs to swing states, where we have a chance. Encourage, with money, a second black migration out of an area that will lynch and burn and discriminate. There are several states where moving liberals in could change things dramatically - Ohio being one such example, Colorado another.
4. totally embrace the Greens - they did their part this time around, and we need to show them we love them. Besides, most of their ideas will have wide appeal
5. hammer on the fact that all the problems that are gonna develop are the TOTALLY the fault of the Republicans. Dems need to spend the next years "on message" about that
6. BOYCOTT! We need to make sure we do not go to conservative cities for conventions, for example. I belong to several groups who do hold conventions, and plan to be quite vocal about this. We need to support liberal retailers over Wal-Mart.
7. Speak up in church. It is now, apparently, OK to use houses of worship as political centers, ala the Roman Catholic church. I go to church, and now plan to approach my minister and others about, at least indirectly, getting out the message.
8. Set up liberal think tanks, to right editorials. The MACKINAC CENTER in Michigan is a right wing editorial mill, never id'd by the papers where their spew appears as such. I plan to work to set up counter-institutions in my home state.
9. In short, everything we do must now be political - we cannot let only one side take advantage of churches, the media, etc. The Repukes' Rules have been OK'd by the boobouisie, so let's play by them too.
