I hate to say this, though I'm sure many have already heard or read something of this nature, but a Bush victory will be seen as victory for a last-minute push by ReichsfuhrerKarl Rove to get out the so-called "Evangelical" vote--you know, the intolerant Bible-thumping crowd.
Anyway, Sunday evening I'm watching the Chicago Bears-San Francisco 49ers game on ESPN and listening to the radio broadcast, ironically enough one of the few remaining locally owned radio-stations in the area. Interestingly enough this particular radio-station, when it's not broadcasting sports, has primarily a "Christian" programing format.
I was just about ready to turn off the radio and go to listening the ESPN crew announce the game while a political ad came on. It said that in 2000 4.5 million "Evangelicals" didn't vote for pResident Bush and if they had there wouldn't have been that affair in Florida.
Needless to say, I was shocked to hear such a blatantly political pitch to a particular religious creed. Yet in the back of my mind I remember some right-wing huckster on some political talk-show or other saying that "gay marriage" was going to be the "issue" that wins it for Bush.
How stupid, I thought then.
But what I didn't count on was eleven, eleven, count them, anti-same sex marriage initiatives on state ballots that, as far as I know, all lost.
How utterly stupid, I'm thinking now. How utterly stupid of the American people to be distracted by something that does not put food on the table, a roof over the head or money in the pocket.
If Bush should win at the end of this long, long night this nation deserves whatever the rest of the world dishs out to us. "Old" Europe will watch us slowly bled to death in the sand of Iraq and the Islamic countries will cut off the sweet, sweet crude that feeds Uncle Sucker's oil Jones. Be prepared for the Dark Ages ahead.
