Forgive me for this, but the good guys have lost tonight. We did everything we could, and we were defeated by ignorance and bigotry. OK, I don't believe we actually lost...but we "de facto" lost. What do we do?
I'm leaving this country. This is a Conservative, bigoted, fascist country, and I do not belong. I'm moving to Eastern Europe for personal reasons. I will self-identify as an ex-American. But I will retain my identity as a Progressive.
Regardless of where we reside, we Progressives will face an identity crisis and I'd like to make a few suggestions about how we cope. We need to stop identifying with a nationality. We need to see ourselves simply as humans within a minority, yet still very large, community. We need to reach out to each other and simply ignore...simply filter out...the ignorant, brainwashed masses.
We need our own rules, our own infrastructure, and our own culture. Rather than identifying with a bigoted, ignorant country, we can choose to create and then identify with a virtual society.
For a start, please read my essay (
http://anotherdreamer.typepad.com/another_dreamer/2004/08/an_alternate_sy.html). We can no longer look to the establishment as a credible source of hope or change.
Also, I'd encourage you to take a look at my recently released software platform (
http://www.infobeing.net), which is the Progressive antidote to a "good ole' boy network." Take a minute to think about the implications of being able to route the right message to all the right people, and then take some time to create some InfoFilters. I know, as any good Progressive, you see that as a distasteful advertisement. I think we need to stop thinking like that. I think we need to support each other, and this is two years of sweat for me.
We need to stop looking to Democrats, or anybody else, to rescue us. With the amount of money we spent on this failed campaign, we could have financed our own future The good news is that it's not too late.
