"Tony Blair has sent one of his closest advisers on a secret peace mission to mend relations with John Kerry, the United States presidential challenger, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.

Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer (the equivalent of Treasurer) and Blair's chief rival, is a friend of Bob Shrum's and has met several times with Kerry. Blair is probably looking forward to the next general election and trying to make sure that a President Kerry doesn't ignore him and/or set up a backchannel to Brown and maybe support him when election time comes around.
