I need to share a personal victory and joy - husband's voting for Kerry!
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 09:26 AM by phylny
A few days ago, I wrote here with sadness because my Republican husband, whom I assured this group was a good, honorable man, told me he was voting for Bush. I shared my sadness in that I had lost some respect for him, and that was so disappointing to me. I also said that I wasn't going to tell him where we vote ;)

Well...this morning, he said, "I've decided to vote for Kerry." I thought it might be coming, because he asked me yesterday, "Who's your dad voting for?" I told him Kerry. Then golfing with my dad yesterday, my husband said to him, "She's really hyped up about Kerry and Bush. I've never seen her so passionate about a presidential election."

I guess the wheels had been turning and turning in his head and now our household is three for three!

When I asked him what changed his mind, he said four things:

1) "I've always respected your judgement in things where you've researched a topic and then presented what you've found in an educated manner."

2) "I think this whole security thing, with Bin Laden, is a scare tactic. I don't honestly think I'm going to be bombed, and more people die in car accidents than died in the WTC - although I don't want to minimize that disaster. It was terrible. But unless we secure our borders, our airlines, our trains, and our ports, we're no more or less safe, no matter who the president is."

3) "I look at John Kerry and there are simply no negatives. With Bush, I think where there's smoke there's fire."

4) "I'm tired of hearing you bitch and moan about it." Hee. When I pressed him, he said, "Not really, not just you, but the more I hear complaints about Bush from educated people, the more I think there's something to it."

I'm the happiest women in New York today! I know his vote, in reality, won't matter in this state (which is blue) or in this county (which is very red) but it matters to me!! Good thing I didn't pursue that divorce ;)

3. glad to here it. I remember your post. Excellent news, you've converted
him and now you can tell him the right polling place. But just to seal the deal, keep talking to him about what the candidates have said in their recent stump speeches:

* " Give me for more years and we will keep the terrorists on the run."
Can you believe that, what the heck does that accomplish ?

Kerry "Vote for me and we will hunt down and kill the terrorists."
Now that sounds like a plan, considering Binny has been free for the last 3 years.

 And it's nice to hear his reasons, and that you were mainly responsible for convincing him.

5. If all repubs were as thoughtful bush wouldn't get a vote.
He obviously loves you and thinks highly of you too. Great job.

6. It does matter!
We all know whats going to happen after the election. The popular vote is going to be very important in the perception war.

We need every single vote we can muster for Kerry. If he gets well over 50% it will be very difficult for them to spin it.

7. Time for positive reinforcement.
Not because he is voting for Kerry, but because he is willing to listen and change his mind.

8. This is what it's all about

Excellent news. Now find the next pin to topple. My parents, both Republicans here in California, also voted for Kerry.

Those on this board who have studied BushCo and the Neo-Cons, and know how evil they are, must look for ways to win over another voter who may be on the fence.

Though we like to make fun of those voters on the fence, the reality is that many people are not aware of all the facts. Those are the people we can win over. I have a friend, a fundamentalist christian, who is voting for Bush because Bush speaks the language of faith. I will not convince this friend.

Look for the next one to bowl over. We've got two full days to get a few more fence sitters over in the Kerry camp.

And you, phylny - I saw your other post a few days ago. I'm very happy for you. I know you were upset before, and what great news this is for you, your family, and the country. One voter at a time... :-)

16. Sounds to me like you have a husband who is a thinking
man willing to look at the issues and vote his conscience. Sounds like a keeper to me. Give him a big old sloppy kiss for all of us at DU, and tell him you love him just a little more now.

20. It matters, even in NY, for the WORLD
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 12:00 AM by lostnfound
I've come to realize that even here in the Safe ('Safe'ly Deluded?) State of TX, changing minds is what matters more than counts of electoral votes. Over the long term, that's what we lefties must do.
Even short term, one convert talking to an undecided or a 'barely Bush' voter can ripple through.

Butterfly effect, ripples everywhere.

21. I'm happy for you and your hubby.
I remember reading your earlier post. I wanted to comment and suggest that you just tell him how dissapointed in him you were. Well, seems like you found a way to win him over to our side. :)
