A frenzied weekend of courting Florida's prized voters kicked off in rock-and-roll fashion Friday night with Bruce Springsteen taking to a Miami stage to perform on behalf of John Kerry -- who delighted the crowd with a few riffs of his own, in Spanish.
Before a screaming, flag-waving crowd, the rocker played opening act to Kerry, grabbing a guitar and launching into an acoustic version of Promised Land, as he warned the crowd that ``American ideals are what's at stake on Nov. 2.''
Republicans countered with political stars of their own: Two counties away, in Palm Beach Gardens, President Bush's brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, and his father, former President George Bush, made a plea for support on the president's behalf.
But it was Springsteen who clearly had the megawatt power. Taking to the stage in jeans and a blazer, the rocker who has previously shied from politicking offered an impassioned defense of Kerry between songs, ticking off a list of ''American values'' he said Kerry honors, including the environment, ''economic justice'' and a ``sane and responsible foreign policy.''
