There are people in the gallery that I haven't seen make a post in YEARS.
Until recently, my picture wasn't even in the gallery, and I only know it's on the "official" DU gallery and I don't think in the more expansive private gallery that used to float around between DU'ers.
Personally, through DU, I know...counting...about 15 black posters who aren't in the Gallery. I'm sure there are many more. I only know about these folks and their racial makeup because of specific posts where they said "I am a black woman" or "I am a black man"
And I'd like to point out what I think is glaringly obvious--you can't always tell someone's race by the colour of their skin.
I know many black people who are whiter than I am, yet they are black. Black mother and black father, but very light skinned.
What about bi-racial children, who take on the skin colour of one parent, but identify with another race?
Why aren't there more Native American's on DU? Maybe they are, and by looking at the photos in the gallery, they're indistinguishable from the Latina/o's or caucasians. That doesn't mean there's no NA's on DU, it's just that they don't LOOK like a Native American. or an Asian. or East Indian. Or Black.
I think a more accurate count of minority population on DU would be through a poll. That way, people can post how THEY identify themselves, not how a stranger looking at a crappy (most likely old or out-dated) picture makes them look.
Not everyone WANTS their picture in the gallery. I only posted one after I found one that didn't really expose my face---I like *some* degree of anonymity, no matter how imagined it may be.
Some people don't have the ABILITY to post their pictures on the internet---no digital camera, no scanner, no interest in posting it for complete strangers to see.
To me, using the gallery as an indicator of racial makeup isn't the right way to go about it. It's not representative in any concrete way.
