There has been talk around my high school of kids being randomly drug tested. Is this legal? If it is, what is the justification.

without parent permission. And I also don't see how it could be legal if it's manditory. I could see maybe a private school getting away with this as long as there was parental permission, but not public.

You have to take a drug test to be on the football team? To join the chess club? Not required otherwise. Of course IANAL, so get advice from someone who is a lawyer.
Requiring this is the perfect way to reinforce the stereotype of dopers as uninvolved losers. It is a really stupid policy. You should welcome alienated kids and try to get them involved, you shouldn't be pushing them further away.
