4. definitely RFK
That means you are in my age bracket. These youngsters will have others to mention--like Obama (I spoke with him for a few minutes at a Farm rally in IL last week, and he will be something to watch) or Dean (he really inspired a lot of our young--me too--and I got to see him in action the same week at Southern Illinois U Edwardsville, when he debated(smacked down) Tony Blankley--both are worthy to be mentioned. But for us oldsters, the Kennedys were during my youth, and had an enormous effect on me. :loveya:

2. recently, Al Sharpton, Barak Obama and Bill Clinton
They gave the best speeches at the convention - of the ones I saw.

I literally got on my feet and cheered during Clinton and Sharpton. And I was watching alone on c-span.org. Obama just left me awestruck.

10. Absolutely! Bill Clinton!
The uniqueness of his success in these times (coming from nowhere, surviving the impeachment, and still fighting for our nation) means he will inspire generations!

and neither are you. He's hardly a leader either, just another RW robot. Of course, he is paid handsomely to support those who would destroy this country, what motivates you?

Enjoy your visit. :hi:

18. To me he's more admirable than inspiring.
He's done so many wonderful things, but he failed terribly as president in a time of crisis and helped turn a vast reservoir of contempt for republicans into 12 years of Reaganomics.

Sorry, but I call'em as I see 'em. He discouraged me more than he inspired me back when he was a leader.

I'm glad he's done so much for the world as a private citizen. Too bad he wasn't so hot as a leader.

26. He wasn't that bad.
He was dealing with economic problems no one had ever seen before, and that's what sank him. He had the sense to appoint Volcker as head of the Fed, but by the time Volcker got a grip on things it was way too late for Carter.

One of my pet peeves about the way Democrats are portrayed in the media revolves around Carter. If you ask anyone, Carter was "soft on defense," whereas Reagan came along and beefed up the military. In actual fact, Carter increased military spending during his term, and started some of the covert wars that dominated foreign policy during Reagan's term. He also was responsible for sucking the soviets into the morass of Afghanistan, which was a key in the dissolution of the USSR. But all those things have slipped into the memory hole of the media, and Carter is portrayed as some kind of weak-kneed liberal do gooder. And that image stains all Democrats.

19. Howard Dean
followed by Bill Clinton.

I only say Dean because although pre-Dean, I always voted but I wasn't really interested in politics until Dean decided to run for president.

Dean really made me believe that as an average middle class citizen, 26 years old, that I can really make a difference in what happens in this country.

I thought Clinton was an amazing president but Dean made me believe in this country and in democracy again.

20. Carter, without a doubt
He always gets left out of every discussion on these things. Like he said last time I saw him, "people sometimes forget that I used to be the President."

But when have we had another President as committed to Human Rights? Never!

- He brokered a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that has lasted 35 years.

- He returned control of the Panama Canal to the people of Panama.

- He gave Habitat for Humanity's founder the Presidential Medal of Freedom (I know, I've seen it) giving the upstart organization enough publicity to house nearly a million people to date. He still spends one week per year building houses with Habitat.

- The Carter Center has spread more democracy and freedom around the world than any recent U.S. President.

I rest my case. Until the naysayers show up.

29. Jimmy Carter.
Torn to shreds by the Republican establishment and lost re-election due to their October surprise BS (which was easily smellable sleaze back when I was in 3rd grade when it happened), yet he still went on to do so much good. He's still an inspiration and probably the most ethical President we ever had.

31. Al Gore inspires me
I have not agreed with his every position. However he is brilliant, he is a populist. He went against the DLC "conventional wisdom" in 2000 and he won the election. Even after being delt some heavy blows by the SCOTUS and his own party, he continues to fight for what he believes is right. I am GRATEFUL that there is someone willing to talk to us like we have brains.
