highschool/college aged DU'ers: If you had to explain to your peers...
...who were politically uninformed, why you are a democrat and not a republican, what would you say?

(FREE college tuition for the best answer... well, not really!)

2. Why I vote Democratic
Why I vote Democratic

The Democratic party stands up for the working man. They support the working man’s Labor Union’s. They support job safety, raising the minium wage to a point where a guy can live and support his family. They support saving the environment from Corporate pollution. They support the woman’s right to choose to have a safe an legal abortion. They support gun laws that encourage teaching gun safety and responsibility for gun owners. They believe large businesses and the top 10% wage earners should be fairly taxed, so the entire tax burden is not on the back of the working class.

The problem I see with a majority of working class republicans, is that they usually vote because of one issue. The guns, taxes, school vouchers, prayer in school, burning the flag, separation of church and state, abortion, etc etc. The Republican party has convinced people into believing that if you are hooked up to any one of these issues, then you must be a republican. For the most part, all working class people who vote republican are just clueless. I asked one guy once why he votes republican, and he started singing the National Anthem. The republicans have successfully staked out highly emotional issues, then turned around and convinced lower wage workers that the democrats are bad, republicans are good. Some vote republican, because they're afraid democrats will pass environmental laws requiring their employer to abide, thus getting laid off.

Take the tax issue for an example. Republicans have convinced many lower wage workers into believing that cutting taxes on the wealthiest, will stimulate the economy and create jobs. Ignoring the fact that Trickle Down Economics doesn’t work. When manufacturing jobs move out of the country, they want you to believe its because of high taxes and labor unions demanding to much. Now we are finding out, it was never because of high taxes, hell they don't pay any. Its all about the bottom line, corporate greed and exploiting the United States like it was a cash cow, to be milked, harvested and to funnel investment funds internationally.

Republicans use scare tactics, to scare the working class into voting for them. If they didn't use the scare tactics, there is no chance they could win. They use racism to push their agenda. They want you to believe that all un-married black woman with children are welfare queens. Homeless people are all lazy leeches. To fool the people, they’ll also have you believe that every other country has an evil dictator out to get us. After all we always have to have that Boogie Man to fool the taxpayer into believing that we need to waste billions of tax dollars building up the military to protect us. In reality, all they’re doing is keeping the military pork corporations that contribute to republican party happy. They’ll also have you believe that they’re a friend to the enlisted man. Then they turn around and treat people in uniform as dumb stupid animals to be used for corporate foreign policy..

A man that works for a paycheck and votes republican, shot himself in the foot to entertain the boss.

A man that works for a paycheck and votes republican, is equivalent as a deer joining the National Rifle Association.

4. Cheap Labor Conservatives
When you cut right through the right wing propaganda, it all comes down to one thing! CHEAP LABOR!

Cheap-labor conservatives don't like social spending or our "safety net". Why. Because when you're unemployed and desperate, corporations can pay you whatever they feel like –– which is inevitably next to nothing. You see, they want you "over a barrel" and in a position to "work cheap or starve".

Cheap-labor conservatives don't like the minimum wage, or other improvements in wages and working conditions. Why. These reforms undo all of their efforts to keep you "over a barrel".

Cheap-labor conservatives like "free trade", NAFTA, GATT, etc. Why. Because there is a huge supply of desperately poor people in the third world, who are "over a barrel", and will work cheap.

Cheap-labor conservatives oppose a woman's right to choose. Why. Unwanted children are an economic burden that put poor women "over a barrel", forcing them to work cheap.

Cheap-labor conservatives don't like unions. Why. Because when labor "sticks together", wages go up. That's why workers unionize. Seems workers don't like being "over a barrel".

Cheap-labor conservatives constantly bray about "morality", "virtue", "respect for authority", "hard work" and other "values". Why. So they can blame your being "over a barrel" on your own "immorality", lack of "values" and "poor choices".

Cheap-labor conservatives encourage racism, misogyny, homophobia and other forms of bigotry. Why? Bigotry among wage earners distracts them, and keeps them from recognizing their common interests as wage earners.
