PC Magazine columnist on Black Box Voting!
Yep, the tech world noticed...from Bill Machrone's column: ExtremeTech

Hack the Vote

An interesting battle is taking shape between Diebold Election Systems and researchers at Johns Hopkins University and Rice University. The Diebold AccuVote-TS electronic voting machine, used in 37 states, apparently has PC-type innards, a touch screen, and a smart card to forestall potential fiascoes such as the 2000 presidential election in Florida.

Researchers have been investigating some source code, ostensibly that of the AccuVote-TS, and have found it wanting. They discovered ways to hack into the system, monitor the progress of an election, vote multiple times, and do all the things that highly motivated, morally deficient people with a political bent have been doing since time immemorial.

You can find the charges and analysis at www.blackboxvoting.org/access-diebold.htm and http://avirubin.com/vote.pdf. You can read Diebold's rebuttal at www.dieboldes.com. snip...

1. Well, this is more evidence of a story with "legs"
Today's news has an AP wire pickup on the Wally O'Dell conflict of interest (Diebold CEO wants Republicans to win, according to his own letter) and now this, an effective point of concern against Diebold's rebuttals.

Every single day there is a story on this, folks. We have not had a day go by for 35 days where at least one member of the traditional (non-Internet) press ran a related story.

3. I'm very encouraged by this article.
The computer industry has been aware of the issue for a while but seeing one of the "mainstream" columnists do an article about the issue tells me it is a subject that really does have a buzz going behind the scenes. I've seen articles about the need for paper trails and that sort of thing every so often. This is the first one I've seen that actually talks about BBV and gives the web addy.

Good job, Bev. You guys ARE getting the word out there.

BTW, out of curiosity, have you guys ever considered posting anything in the warez groups about BBV? Some of the groups were speculating about shrub's contribution to the blackout a while back--it might be that the script kiddies and the honest to gosh hackers would be interested in all this.

Just a thought...

Laura

4. Keep track through Google of how this grows
It's a little-known feature of Google that it will let you see how many other sites link to any given URL. You just do a search on "link:URL"

Presently if you enter link:http://www.blackboxvoting.org/ you come up with 45 links. A bunch are from subsections of the BBV site itself. Others are from prisonplanet.com, blog.deanforamerica.com, scoops.co.nz, buzzflash.com, and so forth. Not a lot so far -- but it's growing, and I'm keeping an eye on it.
