So apparently this is why they set up Dan Rather?? (Sinclair)
There's a professional freep on CNN saying that all the other networks have run stories about Bush's military service and that they "weren't exactly complimentary" so it seems to me like the document story could have been one big concerted effort to set up this argument in advance for Sinclair as well as to smear Dan Rather.

Anyone? Anyone?

1. With Rove its always attack.
I think they threw some poisend bones to CBS to shut them up.
It worked. Maybe it serves as an example to anyone else who gets out of line... they could sabotage your career.

Still, Dan got careless but I really think this is classic Karl Rove stuff.

2. Actually, they set up Dan...
With the FAKED documents everybody was so up-in-arms about. Chuck Stone (he of the Watergate Dirty Tricksters) and "Chip" Rove got together and set this up to "set up" Dan for this "embarassment"--addding even more "fuel" to Sinclair's desire to run this crap as a "fairness" issue.x(

Just what's so fair about running this LIE of a "documentary" without ANY opportunity for the opposing point to be presented?

I hope Sinclair, and its hooker-loving bastard of a CEO, tanks in the stock market, and its investing "patrons" (see www.dailykos.com) take a bath along with them. In addition, I hopw they are among the first of the broadcasting oligopolists that John Kerry's FCC goes after to BREAK UP!:grr:

B-)

4. Has anyone explained why CBS didn't catch the forgeries?
I'm sure they have experts to verify their documents and word is that the fakeness was pretty obvious.

5. The content and context was convincing
lending the documents some inherent credibility. It was the details of presentation that did them in. While the secretary denied typing up those specific documents, she did confirm that their content was reasonable - that the folks dealing with Bush's military record were well aware of what he was getting away with.

By creating truthful documents that are inauthentic in details, you destroy the essential truthfulness of the initial argument.

7. I don't think it is obvious.
I think it was obscure and subtle.

They aren't that stupid.

Neither is the GOP. They worked really hard to make these documents as authentic looking as possible.

6. CBS setup
I still think (and just my opinion) CBS was setup because it was the network that broke the abuse story at the prison in Iraq. I know the name but I'm not going to even try to spell it.

8. No, I don't think they're that good
The CBS story was probably a set up for whatever reason, but I doubt it was a set up so that Sinclair Broadcasting Group would have an excuse to air "Stolen Honor." CBS thought they were airing news but goofed up on authenticating four documents and got absolutely killed in the process. On the other hand, Sinclair just wants to air a hit piece that contains no news value at all a week before the election. This is after Mark Hyman has spent weeks bashing Kerry's Vietnam record on the daily Sinclair right-wing corporate commentaries. Hyman also feels that it's appropriate to bash Heinz Kerry.

It makes me wonder if the rest of the "news" world will be so eager to discredit "Stolen Honor" as they did that "60 Minutes" story.

9. CBS story was a set up to keep the Niger Yellowcake Uranium story out
of "60 Minutes." The one that Josh Marshall and others were ready to go with that was trying to expose who forged the documents that all the intelligence agencies used. There was a tie to Italian Intelligence and possible Israeli influence. They wanted that story killed.

"Salon Online" has the article. Ed Bradley and 60 Minutes were going to spend a full hour on it...Killed....because Rather ran with the TANG Documents.

Who knows whether Dan was a set up, or Dan set it up or a producer set it up or a CBS Exec set it up...but it killed the story that might have "shifted the tectonic plates."

10. do you think this is the surprise Rove was talking about?
I read here the other day something about Rove mentioning that they had a surprise for Kerry ( something along those lines).
