The John Kerry camp has been pushing the topic for a couple of weeks now. Independently produced commercials airing on MTV coincidentally suggest its coming. An email is making the rounds on at least one college campus warning students about it. Kerry backers Howard Dean and Max Cleland have come right out and said it. John Kerry and his runner-up VP choice John Edwards have implied it. It's the military draft. And it's the Kerry campaign's latest attempt to scare voters on what could be an emotional issue.


The bait and switch tactic is simple. If George Bush wins reelection, then the military draft will be reinstated so college age voters ought to cast a ballot for the Massachusetts liberal if they want to be safe from scary Uncle Sam.


There are two glaring flaws with the Kerry strategy. Major Bush Cabinet Secretaries Colin Powell and Donald Rumsfeld oppose reinstating the draft; as does the military hierarchy.


The second and larger flaw is this. There are two Congressional bills pending to reinstate the draft. It's just that not a single Republican has sponsored either bill. Both bills were immediately buried after introduction.


New York Congressman Charlie Rangel introduced H.R. 163 in January 2003. All 14 co-sponsors are Democrats. The Senate version, S.89, was the handiwork of lame-duck South Carolina Senator Fritz Hollings. Not a single other Senator joined his effort.


So while some in Washington want to reinstate the military draft, it is some of John Kerry's most committed supporters who are pushing the plan. Of course, that little detail is not mentioned in the Kerry talking points. But then what's a little lie when your entire political career is based on a pattern of lies, embellishments and exaggerations?

Yeah, right. If that were true, then it ought to consist of an interview with Senator McCain, saying what a good job Kerry did with him. Somehow, I can't see Sinclair broadcasting that a few days before the election.
