We had a debate party - hidden, of course
I wonder how many hidden Democrats there are in Kansas City. Here where we never speak of religion or politics in public. It just isn't done. People are too divided in their beliefs.

But we had a party in a home. And I was surprised at all the people who came. And we had a great time. It was the only time I have been able to say what I think in years and years.

We watched the debate. We screamed and booed. It was wonderful.

The next night Billy Graham was in town. 40,000 showed up. That's a lot people. And probably all of them are fierce Republicans. Bible-believin Christian folk.

You know, I am Christian, too. But my kind of Christianity is a sin. Sometimes I wonder how we ever got so far apart.

1. Ah, Billy Grahm; the well-documented anti-Semite?

Excerpted from a beliefnet.com article:

"What did Billy Graham say to Nixon? The tapes reveal that Rev. Graham complained about Jewish domination of the media, an assessment with which, disturbingly, Nixon concurred. Graham then said, "If you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something." Later in the conversation, when Nixon brought up the subject again, Graham replied that he had many Jewish friends. "They swarm around me and are friendly to me," Graham said, "because they know that I am friendly to Israel and so forth, But they don’t know how I really feel about what they are doing to this country..."

4. Strange, isn't it? How we all have learned to keep quiet!
While 40,000 "dickheads" are out there screaming their lungs out. Everyone puts their arms in the air and screams "Thankyou Jesus."

They meet in groups all over KC for breakfast and bring their battered bibles. And they make a big deal of praying. And living the God approved life. And believe in every word in the Bible - they are Bible Believing Christians. Science is not in the Bible - so it is heresy to believe science.

Their churches are huge - thousands belong to one church. One Baptist Church here has a Taco Bell inside.

Sometimes it is hard not to hate them.

5. Well, it's certainly not Christian to hate them...

But, I'm not a Christian; so fuck 'em. I can't believe the jury's still out on Evoloution with these people...

And Science; they all love the benefits of it, tooling around in their SUV's, throwing hotpockets in their microwaves, getting their stomachs stapled, flying in planes that use shit like radar...

I still don't get how somebody could take a 1900 year-old text and think it exists to the exclusion of reason, of empiricism. It's really just beyond me.

I mean, how the heck do these folks explain, say, dinosaurs? You'd think the Bible would have mentioned SOMETHING about them, if it's the word of God and all...

10. It is truly a relief to drive through Santa Monica, isn't it?
I love it there. Notice how WONDERFUL it is to drive down 20th street from San Vicente? HUGE Kerry yard signs, and lots of 'em! We live nearby.

My daughter is a huge fan of the "Chicken Car" that someone owns, always parked on Lincoln just south of Montana Avenue. When I pick her up from friends' places near there, we always make a point of driving by it to take another look. She wants to own it someday. Ever seen it?

11. Nope, can't say I've seen the 'chicken car', but...

I never drive on stinkin' Lincoln; too much traffic :) Maybe I'll go check it out tonight!

Yes...Santa Monica is a fantastic thing...nice to be living in a town full of rational people. Except some of the loonies on Wilshire, of course :) I think most people in the country don't understand how beautiful it is here by the might blue Pac. Let's not tell them :)

12. They're often derided as "the People's Republic of Santa Monica"
by those who tend to care about, and expect their government to care about, themselves only. They've also got Bobby Shriver (of the Shrivers/Kennedys running for city council. Have you been to the new Dem HQ that opened up on Wilshire at 9th Street?

And yes, go check out the "chicken car." Traffic's not too bad later in the evening, anyway. Usually parked on the north side of the street. It's REALLY a keeper. Last time we went by there, we took pictures.

2. I wouldn't live in the middle of the country
for all the tea in China. Surrounded by brainless freepers, what fun!

13. Hiding here in plain sight.
Lenexa, Kansas. Let those thousands of us know you are here, too. I feel isolated sometimes, until, until, until...someone lets it spill that they don't like this administration, they fear for the country's future, their children's future, and they are not going to vote for *. And if a lot of other folks don't speak up, they are nodding and murmuring assent.

There are, I am finding, many here of a like mind. But yeah, we are quiet. A shame, but I'm a chicken unless it is a really safe environment.

By the way, I went to two parties over the weekend. Both hosted by affluent suburbanites. Both themed in support of the Democratic Party. Yes.

14. I would think Lenexa would be even worse
Kansas always goes Republican.

And you guys have that total nut out there in Topeka - what's his name - Palmer? Newspaper ignores him now because he is so crazy. The one who goes to funerals of gays who have died of AIDS AND PICKETS AND USES HIS BULL HORN. What a guy.
