POETIC JUSTICE IN IRAQ?

Fri Aug 29, 2:47 AM ET

Almost all the U.S. and coalition casual ties in post-war Iraq have been in flicted in the so-called "Sunni Triangle," which includes Baghdad and the towns to the north and west of the capital. The region is predominantly Sunni Muslim; it was and still seems to be sympathetic to Saddam Hussein.

(snip)

More to the point, the Sunnis seem also not to realize that coalition forces are all that stand between them and the bloody vengeance of the people they oppressed for three decades: the Shi'ites of the south and the Kurds of the north who together form a majority in Iraq. If the Americans were to pull out of Iraq prematurely, it's likely that the Shi'ites would fall upon the Sunnis in a civil war that would make Lebanon's look like child's play, with casualty numbers out of Rwanda.

Yet the tribes who grew fat and prosperous during the Saddam dictatorship continue to push for just that. If murderous attacks continue on coalition forces in the triangle, perhaps the coalition should consider arming a Shi'ite militia and allowing it to "pacify" Baghdad and the Sunni triangle.

There would be a certain irony to this.

2. This will be the CIVIL WAR everone was afraid of having
Funny that this idiot wuld suggest it, most observers think it will happen sooner or later with the Kurds, making up the third leg of the triangle.

3. Civil war was likely
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 06:54 AM by teryang
...the day the Americans invaded and destroyed the Iraqi government. How the Iraqi people resolve that conflict isn't up to us to decide. We can't stop it.

We supported the Sunnis in their brutal dominance of the country for decades. I wouldn't predict any outcomes.

The only poetic justice will be the ousting of the chimp fascist junta after their humiliating military failure in colonial Iraq.

What are they going to do? Reinstate the no fly zones? How will they justify it?

5. We were warned of this
I remember reading Brent Scowcroft and Tony Zinni's warnings in the fall that this is exactly what would happen and we would be micromanaging Iraq for years trying to hold the different ethnic factions together and paying the price in bloodshed. When it comes unraveled, it will really be ugly, possibly involving a broader regional war that brings the intrusion of Iran, Turkey, Syria and Saudi Arabia. What will Iraq and the rest of the Middle East look like then?

4. stupid idea
Yes, the solution is to turn Iraq into Bosnia. Was this Bush's idea of liberation? Actually the attacks are not isolated in the Sunni Triangle and have been increasing in the Shia sections of Iraq.
