Can Retired Military be "Called Up"?

I have a friend - huge Bush supporter. Former marine (did his 8 years...fought in Iraq '91). He's now 33 and wondering if he can be called back up.

Does anyone know? Link?

1. Only if he's IRR...

Did he receive a full discharge when he left active duty, or did he go into the Individual Ready Reserve?

If it's the former, then he cannot be called back up. If it's the latter, he sure as hell can.

2. First, he's not retired - unless medically

you need 20 for that. You have an inactive commitment, can't say for sure what it is - mine was for a total of 12 years and I was Iraq era (error). His might be done, depending on when he got out.

Next, he doesn't need to be called up - he can volunteer!

If you serve 8 years you don't have a IRR commitment But can certainly enlist again at age 33 and put his ass where his mouth is.

If he supports Bush and thinks this war is such a great thing, he should gladly join up and jump into the fray. Of course, if Bush "wins" this one, there'll be nothing to wonder about. Since your friend's 33, he'll be drafted, as will all of you between the ages of 18 and 34. In my case, I'll be getting my grandsons the hell outa Dodge as soon as I can. 5. Maybe if we have a Volkssturm

Volkssturm, literally translated as people storm, was a German national militia of the last months of the Third Reich.

We could create an army of old, young or otherwise unqualified folk to send to iraq as a last resort. Better to keep fighting those bad guys there than here.

Otherwise, yes many of those who have not been completely discharged could be called up. I think the period is 2 years after your enlistment is over.

Just don't call it a draft yet.

6. When I enlisted in the Army in '87 the way it was explained to

me is that once you sign on the dotted line they own you for life. It is highly unlikely that you'll be recalled after you've passed the 8 year commitment date, but if things ever got bad enough you can be reactivated at any time.

9. According to the freeper-types I talked to he has to resign his commission

in writing otherwise he can be called up, for a number of years, for any reason after he has left the reserves or active duty.
