When they say we are preaching “Class-warfare”
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 05:29 PM by The Lone Liberal
We should answer, “You are damn right we are, it’s the rich against the rest of us.” It is the Republicans who have brought back the “Monopoly man”, the Robber Baron, the Economic Elite. It is the Republicans that are hell-bent on breaking the working class in this country. It is the Republicans that are devaluing our heritage. For it was our grandfathers, grandmothers, fathers, mothers and aunts, uncles who fought for the little dignity and justice that was given the working man. Today that dignity and justice is in jeopardy and as god is our witness we will not go quietly back to the days of the sweatshops, low wages, and the indignity suffered by the working class at the hands of the rich.

This Labor Day let us dedicate ourselves once more, as did those who came before us, to the working class fight for justice, fair-play and dignity. Let us say to those who hold the working class in such low esteem that we have little, but we are many, and when a small trickle of stream gathers together with others it will become a might, roaring torrent that will sweep away all who stand before it.

Let know one in the future say “they stood in silence as the chains were once more struck around their necks.”

Right on!

I DO support class warfare. The lower classes need to fight to get what they want, not just in this country but everywhere. We're not lynching any billionaires, but it's a figure of speech.

7. Another response could be
to ask why awareness of oppression by one class of another is considered class warfare. Oppressors call that awareness "warfare" to trivialize and discredit the threat to them that knowledge is.

12. Too late....
the American people have been too commercialized and inculcated with an insatiable need for more bright shiny toys.

You want proof?

In the US, when the underclass riots, they don't kill policemen and politicians like they do in other countries. They go looting (although some would refer to this as "extreme shopping")

It's pathetic.

18. "Extreme Shopping" I luv it...
I've always thought during blackouts the folks that loot appliances, TV's, stereo equipment, microwave ovens, et ctera, are actually optimists...

Class warfare, as Al Fraken mentioned in his latest Best Seller, is like the peasant revolt in the late Middle aAges where the peasants killed the Lord in the manor, roasted him and fed his roasted flesh to his family.

Now that is class warfare.

Personally I would like to see the corporate criminals chased down, beaten, and cuffed just like on those reality TV shows, like Cops.

Don't fuck with the black owned stores
but hit the Foot Lockers

17. The amazing thing is that
they call it class warfare when we point out what they're doing.

We say: "Many people will lose their overtime under this bill." (This is a fact the Right does not dispute, BTW.)
They say: "Class warfare!"

We say: "A family of four can't live on two full-time, minimum-wage jobs in most cities."
They say: "Class warfare!"

We say:"You're cutting thousands of students off of federal student aid."
They say:"Class warfare!"

And so on.

Most of the time, we're not even fighting -- we're parroting their own lines back at them.

you are so right lone liberal. Middle working class and poor people are the ones getting screwed. The Republicans know full well which side they are on, and the idiots who fall for their transparent propaganda are the first to get screwed.

I'm not interested in ideology, I just want solidarity from my fellow Democrats, Americans, and human beings.

32. I say we need to start naming names
of the families, of the executives - notice how the names of major corporations are missing from the political conversation? Only in business do you hear their names, and we pretend they are only peripherally involved in electoral politics.

Most people don't know that Bush has worked with Ken Lay for 20 years - why is that?

25. Naah
"Class warfare" is a Republican code word. Liberals will never turn this phrase against them. The way to respond to it is to emphasize that you're talking about the super rich, the top .2% of the population, and their responsibilities vis a vis everyone else.

If you don't do this you're just playing into the hands of conservatives. Their goal is to convince people who are making, say, $50,000, that their interests are the same as someone who is worth $500 million.

36. Perhaps the message we need to get across
to the masses is that if you are making $50,000 a year, you probably EARNED it. If you are making $50,000,000 a year, you are probably STEALING it.

Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 10:40 PM by culoclown
the poor, serfs, slaves, etc. per Howard Zinn (and nothing has changed), I have been wondering of late if there ever was or is a fair and balanced economic system. My father having been brainwashed for most of his 80 years says that if you redistributed the wealth, within a few years it would end up in the hands of the same people. He's too old to argue with, but how could that be? On the other hand, my long-dead grandfather while reading the newspaper said "one day there will be a class war in this country." This was back in the 50's and I was too young to know what he meant. Can't ask now. Anyway, what models are there for anything but what we're stuck with. The French Revolution was a bust. Communism didn't work. Apparently some of the European countries have a little more fair system but who really knows? I'd really like to believe there was something better than being a wage slave for me and mine but I don't because for generations that's all we've known. I'm new here so forgive me if I've overstepped boundaries of which I am unaware.

31. the French Revolution
Now, I'm not going to call for the rich one and a half percenters to be dragged into the public square and beheaded - I'm against the death penalty - but if average Americans are getting networked and communicating a lot more, are tech-savvy and heavily armed, it's going to be difficult to keep us down much longer.

37. Jump right in, Culoclown. You're doing great.
Revolution is an ongoing process. Our own "Founding Fathers" had some great ideas, but didn't recognize the needs and rights of blacks or native Americans or women. There are even "Liberals" today who don't recognize the just demands of all these people or of immigrants or gays. See http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Liberals . We need to applaud the best of the past and yet fight for an even better future.

42. thousands of alternatives
What really works? The Amana colonies had a pretty good system, but they broke up when most of them decided they wanted their own car. People opt out of this system all the time - they join the drug trade or other illegal activities, they commit suicide, they try to start communes, co-ops, and alternative corporations, etc. There is no one system which is going to be ideal for all times and places. It is like what Daniel Quinn wrote: "It cannot possibly be said too often that there is no one right way to live; that's only the delusion of the most murderous and destructive culture that history has ever produced." A culture that he calls "takers", and it should be clear that America's top 1% are the definitive takers.

28. We should give 'em examples of REAL class warfare
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 11:17 PM by John_H
Sending a 25k a year corporal to die for halliburton's no-bid contracts

Giving Ken Lay a tax cut that could pay for enough prescription drugs to keep 2,100 senior citizens alive.

Making sure the heirs of billionairs never have to work a day in their lives while 2 million formerly hard working people can't feed their kids dinner.

Killing overtime for 8 million middle class workers while increasing the value of their bosses' stock options by letting their companies dodge taxes overseas.

Anyone with fifteen minutes and half a brain can think of a couple dozen more. Have 'em ready the next time someone pulls out the "class warfare" card.

It's a war they started, and brazenly expect us to pay for on top of everything else. Oh, they can try to minimize the destruction they are bringing by saying the magic words, "class warfare," but they fired the first shots, and keep the battle going.

Damn right it's time we fought back.
