"Constantly stay on the offensive"
In response to one question, Bush said, "The best way to defeat them is to never waver, to be strong, to use every asset at our disposal, is to constantly stay on the offensive and, at the same time, spread liberty."

I was shocked and I'm surprised I haven't seen more discussion here about that comment. The idea of being 'constantly on the offensive' smacks of major militaristic attitudes and made me think, "he's talking about unending war". Did anyone else notice that or did it leave an impression on you?

2. That statement shocked me, too
I said to my husband, the football fan, "Isn't the best offense a good *defense*? What is he talking about - he wants to keep invading countries??"

3. I'm glad you brought this up.
This is the exact quote that bothered me the most from him last night. I thought Kerry would jump on it more. He totally dismissed the idea of defense. He said that comment they all say about "they only have to get it right once.." But the point is if you are just looking at offense you will not protect yourself from the one time they do get it. You must play defense because you can't find them everywhere on the planet.
Thanks for talking about this point.

4. we were waiting for you to bring it up! (hehe) I had the same reaction
you did - bush and the neocons are all war/all the time. It is plain for any citizen to see because that is all we hear from this admin: fear, fear, fear, must protect, must attack.

However, for someone constantly on the offense, bush sure came off last night as a total wimp.

To put it in a basketball frame (don't ask me why I don't know): Kerry dribbled his ball continuously last night - all over the place. bush was confined to bounce his ball three times and stop - like I had to playing (ancient) girls' basketball.

The world appreciates his swagger about as much as we Dems do.

7. Yep
I just hope everyone who watched the debate picked up on that. It's one thing to act like a bully but when you come right out and admit it, it kind of takes the breath away.

12. I would hope so, also, but with much of our population "educated" with
football imagery, and "kick their butts" is their idea of "safety", I have my doubts.

This nation has sooooooooo much growing up to do. :(

9. We don't need no steenkin' diplomacy.
Like the "unconditional surrender" demanded of Japan that FDR and Truman made. It gave the Japanese diplomats who wanted to end the war no room to maneuver against the militarists.

The same nonsense here. No negotiations. No attempt to find solutions other than the one we wish to impose on the middle-east. Only the "Give in or we will destroy you" approach.

Hubris.

10. Thank you. I couldn't remember that quote.
That remark sucked the air right out of the roomthe debate party was in. We were all shocked he would actually say that. I find "being on the offensive" offensive!
