Karl Rove: 'We've Got a Couple of Surprises' for Kerry
Karl Rove: 'We've Got a Couple of Surprises' for Kerry

President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, said Wednesday that the Bush-Cheney campaign is planning some October "surprises" for challengers John Kerry and John Edwards.

"We've got a couple of surprises that we intend to spring," Rove told ABC radio host Sean Hannity while explaining that he intends to wage an aggressive campaign no matter what the polls show.

Uh, Karl? You might wanna dip into that "bag of tricks" a little earlier than planned....

They have an imposter in the wings. Whatever they spring, the nation can not survive with four more years of this neo-con regime.

74. That's why I wish Kerry had used Bush's words last night
"I don't know where he is, and I don't care. He's just not that important."
(or some such)

Then Kerry could have said, unfortunately, because of the mess created in Iraq, that may just be true.

10. They're going to thaw out Osama
early one Sunday morning in October. Everyone at church will be talking about the brave little chimp. The NFL, NASCAR, and Major League Baseball playoffs will be cutting to news of our hero capturing OBL. Rove will personally put the little chimp on the plane to fly over to Afghanistan and then he will move to the Marine One chopper and land in the mountains where OBL lies dead. Bush will then jump on a white horse with Osama's head and ride off into the sunset as Wolf Blitzer speaks words of praise with Pete Seeger softly singing "So fair the well, my rambling boy, may all your ramblings bring you joy".

Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 01:42 AM by Mojambo
Let's just say that they happen to get lucky and nab Bin Laden in October.

Isn't it going to be awfully easy for people to say that it was a politically orchestrated stunt by Rove?

It's like when you threaten to kill an enemy and then they turn up dead. The suspicion is going to fall on you.

Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 02:16 AM by Cat Atomic
It was descriptive of the lowest sort of self-serving abuse of power.

But now, even mainstream media hacks just assume the Bush administration will pull one. They openly ponder what it might be, as if it isn't shameful.

21. A Surprise? Should I Bring my Party Hat?
I think the Bush appearance tonight was enough of a *surprise* for all of us disillusioned democrats who were expecting a corporate-sponsored snowball fight.

So, what does Rove have planned?

At this point, dirty personal allegations wouldn't be much of a "surprise," per se - at least not enough to truly affect Kerry's strong numbers.

Everyone and their grandmother is expecting Osama in November. I honestly think that his "un-thawing" would be more counterproductive to republicans, since it would immediately spur most of America into questioning the unnaturally convenient timing. Questions like "Why did they wait this long to unveil him? Are they playing politics with terror?" would resonate, even through republican-leaning talk shows. People are a bit more skeptical now, and Rove understands that.

Brainstorming with a Rovian mindset, you discover some necessary outcomes for an effective October Surprise. The ultimate result will be not to galvanize the 20-30% that are already going to vote for Bush regardless of what happens, but to either scare the undecideds into voting themselves into a dictatorship or, failing that, suspend the election somehow.

I'm optimistic that the democrats have something up their sleeves as well - a strategy to preempt Rove's fear tactics. I have a feeling that the post-debate battle for the White House will become really surreal.

if you truly have something why would you say it ? why not just let it out when you let it out ? it seems it could be an attempt to try to get the kerry campaign off balance. kind of like the "make him sweat" during the debates thing.

25. Don't misunderestimate the BFEE's will to win
They will do ANYTHING to keep their racket going. The alternative is spending a looooong time in jail when their crimes are finally prosecuted.

It also doesn't matter if we see through the tricks - it's about the millions of voters who didn't see through the CBS memo stunt, either. As long as there is no irrefutable evidence for framing an event as a dirty trick, the media will refrain from reporting it as such, no matter how conviced DUers are.

I fully expect at least one major pre-election event, and definitely something major post-election.

My best guess right now is allegations of voting fraud against dems if Kerry wins, possibly involving Diebold machines. Then a couple of republican state leges will send their own slate of electors instead of popularly elected ones, like they threatened to do in Florida in 2000. Woodruff & co will discuss at length how this is perfectly legal and does not create a constitutional crisis, etc...

Be prepared. Don't play into their hand.

At what point does a surprise become a "dirty low-down slimey trick" in the minds of the public? The closer we get to 11/2, the more that perception is likely to shift. Find Osama on October 28th? Who's gonna believe that's not a set-up? It will back-fire.

63. Oktoberfest
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 05:07 PM by MagicalSpork
I believe it is highly unlikely that the republican attack-squad will do something as pedestrian as to wheel out Osama bin Laden this month.

If you believe that the Bush administration relies on the persistence of terrorism as a cover for worldwide corporate fraud and the expansion of U.S. empire, then it follows that they *need* someone like Osama bin Laden out there, presenting constant conflict - much like the communist threat - in order to exempt their own actions from scrutiny.

I believe the "October Surprise" will be something that will poise republicans for a new conquest. Something that creates dissension in America, so that a seemingly benevolent Bush administration can prove their valor by saving the day. If you boil it down, it has been, is, and always will be as simple as this: Manufacture the problem, then create a desired solution.

We need to fight this, and we need to fight it hard. We need people to know that we see it coming. It is against human nature for us to consciously allow these people to use their own citizens as fodder for political gain.

66. I have a good feeling that the democrats have an Oct. surprise.
I'm not sure what the Democratic party has up their sleeve, but I just know there will be something. I've never seen the democratic party this fired up in my life. This time the cons have a real fight on their hands. Oh sure Karl Rove will be slinging his mud, because they know they can't run on Bushes record. But, we know that the republicans are scared! The voters are becoming aware that the democratic party has a great candidate and we are united to get this filthy corrupt administration out of Washington. The cons know that we'll be going to the voting booths in numbers like they never seen before. Look for the democratic party to win back the white house along with seats in both houses.

68. Only a desperate fool says this sort of thing to a television audience....
Karl will probably just make additional attempts to promote the previous "dirty tricks" that didn't catch on outside of the Freeper community: the Kerry-intern story, the Kerry supported the Communists during the war story, etc.
