2. He is definitely not a Republican plant

This guy was doing liberal talk radio back in the 60's.

I listen to his Sirius show often and he is rabidly anti-Bush. He is also rabidly anti-Iraq war, which is probably what got him fired from his last gig with Clear Channel. He is definitely a liberal, but isn't afraid to criticize anyone. He is as anti-Republican as anyone here. I do know he plans on voting for Kerry, though he's more of a Howard Dean guy. He was hoping for Hillary Clinton to get the nomination a while back, because he actually likes her.

He explained that when he subs for a nationally syndicated host (Lionel and soon Ed Schultz), he toes the party line a bit more, since he's talking to a mixed crowd of liberals and conservatives. But he considers his homebase show on Sirius Left to be more 'preaching to the converted', so he tells it the way he sees it. There are no sacred cows on his show.

I'd say listen a bit more. He is definitely not a Republican.

And he never worked for FOX, but he was on once, and is good friends with Alan Colmes. He trashes FOX all the time otherwise.

You can learn more about him on his website, www.radiofreejack.com

4. Alex is an acquired taste
Usually, the main criticism against him is he's a bit self-indulgent.

His show is a bit more entertainment-based. If you're looking for someone who breaks news, listen to Franken. But Alex is at his best when he interacts with callers. He's an old pro at this. Also has some good guests occasionally (Howard Dean was on a few weeks ago).

He doesn't toe any party line, but he is a lefty. Perhaps a bit more libertarian than most, though. He has been known to bash Kerry for being a bit stiff. He wants someone who goes for Bush's throat.

I listened to Bennett when he was a morning guy in San Francisco back in the 80s and 90s. Funniest radio show ever.

As for Colmes, his radio show is a bit of a surprise. It's not bad. He actually lets loose a bit more than he does on TV, where Insannity keeps him on a short leash. If Colmes is the closest to liberal you have on your local radio, you could do a lot worse.

5. He helped to mold my political viewpoints.
I listened to him in the 60's when he did overnights in NY. In my very Conservative household it was a safe way to rebel to stay up late and listen to Alex. WBAI and Alex Bennett were both the strongest liberal media forces in NYC back then.

He also turned me on to the joy of Rum Raisin Ice Cream--He promoted it at Max's Kansas City. Anyone else here remember him from the good old days?

6. Bennett is NOT GOP....
He was on radio for YEARS here in the Bay Area and he is no Repub - unless he's had some sort of brain disorder in the past few years.

He is made in the Bill Maher/Larry Flynt mold -- libertarian leanings with a strong emphasis on civil liberties regarding drugs and sex.
