5. most of the country is illiterate
... as in they can't write a coherent paragraph. I wonder in a
nation of 280,000,000 people, that 52,000 people write on DU, mostly
in 1 or 2 sentence shorts.

Gosh, i'm gonna need a phoenetic-reading babelfish to read the future
of american literature.... Its spooky.

Well, i read it again, and i still agree with it. The complainer
thinks i'm personally insulting the writer... rather not. I'm
stating the obvious.

Why?

I'm sorry folks but this is unacceptable how low have we lowered our standards since Bush stole office? If he wanted to make a point he could have at least done a better job IMO. He's claiming to be 53 years old for petes sake!

32. Hmmm...
First of all, the post in question is torture to read.

Second of all, some disruptors like to post in such a fashion to make a bad impression of us.

I don't know - this guy may just not have real polished spelling skills, but the post in question, in addition to being grammatically unintelligible, doesn't seem to be making ANY cogent point.

The fact that he's not really participating in his own thread also makes me wonder.

I saw no malice in the posts drawing attention to the spelling and grammar problems - we're all very tolerant of such things, since most of us are also apt to make mistakes, but come on....

I hope 'Dave' will use the spell-checker, then reread his own posts in the future to at least make sure that they are making some sort of point.

30. I agree with you. We all make typos...but.....
if someone wants to communicate an idea clearly, the best way to do that is through the use of standard English (or whatever your language is). There's a reason that grammar & punctuation exist. It's so that people can understand you.

31. Of course you're stating the obvious.
Some people would love to live in an insulated world where everybody's spectrum of expression conforms to a narrow slit of human behavior. Ooh, let's all pretend that we don't have opinions and that we don't react to the world around us because somebody might get offended...

36. when dave tells me he's offended, i'm fine
Its this proxy faux concern that is all too PC... people who get
offended "FOR" you, and IM people to take proxy offense.

I'm sorry Dave, for any offense unintended. I mean you no harm to
discuss illiteracy in your gramatically traumatized thread. ;-)

I just gotta laugh.

6. take it easy..........
It might take tremendous courage for someone not sure of grammer, spelling +/or syntax to post. Let's look to content here.

You are right. There are a lot of lies on TV right now. I believe that more women are for Kerry, and so are most Black people.

I'm glad you're here looking for the REAL STORY!

11. I am taking it easy.
We're not talking about little mistakes (like the one you made -- "grammer" instead of "grammar") -- we're talking about a word that appears in almost every damn sentence. If I didn't know how to spell "are" I'd be more than grateful if somebody pointed that out. I get annoyed by uptight language purists too. But knowing how to spell "are" isn't exactly Shakespeare.

I actually think that your approach is kinda condescending toward Dave, as if he were in the special olympics and I pointed out that he can't run fast or something -- with you responding "come on, most handicapped people don't have the courage to get out there at all!".

21. it is common to misspell when typing
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 03:35 PM by Cheswick
our brain automatically types the word that we use the most. For instance I often type and rather than an. It just happens to people who type quickly and do not check.

28. And if you use "an" four times in a post...
...will you type "and" all four of those times?

I don't understand why people get so uptight about being corrected. That's like my father. He's lived in the US for almost 13 years and he still can't compose a valid English sentence...

15. Since you're giving out advice...

I'll give some to you; use punctuation to separate sentences. Otherwise, it makes us "look like Freepers."

For example:

"Awww, you poor thing! Do us a favor, willya, use spellcheck and proofread before you post; you're making us look like freepers."

There are other ways, but you get the idea.

(Unless I missed the sarcasm, and if so, I apologize, that wasn't a very nice thing to say to Dave. Lecture over.)

You're right. The polls are rigged and the news is rigged to make us all think we should think like everyone else. They HAVE to make us believe this s-election is going to be close IN ORDER TO STEAL IT.

IT IS NOT CLOSE.
IT IS NOT GOING TO BE CLOSE.
IF THEY TELL YOU IT IS, THEY ARE LYING.

I've also noticed that the Kerry/Edwards yard signs in my area get stolen or defaced while the bush/cheney ones are left alone. The pubs don't want it to look like there's any support for Kerry/Edwards so that others won't vote for them (wanting to follow the crowd.)

33. I feel your outrage.....
And i ain't gonna knock you spelling and grammar either my brutha.

Some of you folks should just be plain ashamed of yourselves. This all so high and mighty act some of you cads display is terrible in the worst vein.

I guess if my mother who had to quit school in the 6th grade to work, so the family farm would not be lost. Or my father, who was dyslexic in the days before the even knew what dyslexic was, would be unwelcome to express their views?!?!

Elitism in any form is reprehensible. Also at such a close time in the election, making fun of working class people who may not have the best education is really bright. Remarks such as that can cause people to switch parties, have second thoughts. Very unwise indeed.

And Dave, keep on keepin' on brutha.
